Should I apply this mod before or after playing through the game?

I just bought Torchlight II as part of the daily sale, really loved TL1. So I just want to ask if I miss out on anything by just using Essentials right away instead of the base game? I mean clearly this adds a lot of stuff, but does it change the experience of the game drastically as compared to the base?
