Builds and Favorite Skills
For those of you who have tried the Dread Pirate class, what sort of builds are you using and what are your favorite or least favorite skill? Knowing this will help me improve the class going forward.

I absolutly loved the Flare grenade skill, but was unable to build a character around it due to it being locked at only one point.
Some nice Ideas for the skill tier bonuses are adding a burn, increased damage, increased throwing range, increased explosion range,

Thanks for the feedback Calchas91. I will move the flare grenade to the top of my to do list, and try to show the menace tree some improvements for the next update. For the flare grenade in particular, I will see what I can do to add a DoT and other effects while still keeping it as a primarily support skill (for variety and versatility).

I fooled around a little bit as a Dread Pirate earlier today. I would have played longer, but I'm not super big on playing classes that are still missing big elements in their skill trees.

I have to say though that I really liked Explosive Powder Keg. I think the skill fits in really well with this class... its totally a pirate thing to do. While fooling around with it, I realized that as a Female Dread Pirate when I used the skill it would play the male grunting clip instead of one for the female. Just letting you know.

As far as progressing the skill (tier bonuses ect) goes... I think some sort of movement debuff should accompany the damage. Getting hit by an explosive should daze or stun. Something along those lines would also add value to the burning ground thats left in the wake of the barrel going up in flames.

Maybe Tier 1 could be... Adds a 50% chance to Daze foes caught in the explosion, causing them to move, attack and cast 50% slower for X seconds.
Tier 2... Increases the size of the explosion to Y yards.
Tier 3... ?

Just some ideas. I have no idea what you already have planned for any of the skills, but you asked for feedback so theres mine,

Keep up the good work. : )

@anyroad2 - Thanks for the feedback. The explosive keg is one of my favorite skills, and was one of the first I made for the class. The hardest part of skill design for me, at least for the menace skill tree, is maintaining variety and making each skill feel like a useful but distinct option. So many of the skills focus on explosions of some sort I keep feeling like they should all burn, stun, slow, etc. Trying to decide how to split these effects up in a way that makes sense for the skill and maintains balance is what I am working on at the moment. The one thing that I know I want to add to the keg is increasing the size of the burning ground afterward so that the Pirate has a ranged ground cover aoe.

I love this class. I think the passives are amazing, and it is really fun to use a sword and gun at the same time. I normally don't comment on this kind of stuff but this class is really cool, any idea on when the skills might be updated?

My favorite skill is powder keg, however I worry that others on my team won't be able to see the area I hit with it. Also is it just me or does the black spot (another one of my personal favorites) take a while to use?
BemusedBear  [udvikler] 27. juli 2013 kl. 16:26
@hungry hungry hippo - I am glad you love the class. The skills should be updated in a few weeks. Currently shopping around for a new computer (which has taken me awhile to save up for). As for black spot, the cast time may be a bit slow. I will see if I can adjust that up. And powder keg definitely needs some attention on the visuals. It is a balancing act between conveying enough oomf and not cluttering the screen.

I really love the Dread Pirate it is almost everything I was looking for in a class. The minions are super intuitive and the first mate is really awesome. I love how you made the class so versitile while still able to kick so much ass doing a bunch of things,
please don't take the minions out of Dread Pirate because buliding minions is going to be awesome with Black spot and jolly roger once I get them all upgraded I'll cream through anything.
Also something I thought of while playing is you could have another option for weapon wielding - you already have sword and board, pistol and sword, and a passive upping pistol damage which are all integral for the Pirate but I was also thinking about using a pistol and a shield, that plus the minions would be perfect. Only a suggestion of course, keep trucking on this class it is truly amazing.

@New Age Helen Keller - I was thinking about making the shield passive only require a shield (as opposed to shield and melee) to boost its usability for different play styles like a pistol + shield combo as you mentioned. To balance this out I am going to be changing Bonetti's defense to require a melee weapon. Otherwise, the gunpowder weapons just sweep the board in terms of passives. Thematically, Bonetti's should be sword only anyway but just sword maybe a bit too limited.

really enjoying the class just started so i haven't gotten too deep into the trees yet but my thoughts on powder keg tier bonuses are tier 1 increased kicking range, tier 2 larger aoe, tier 3 burning or some sort of shrapnel effect
BemusedBear  [udvikler] 3. okt. 2013 kl. 15:21
@ozzy - This are some good suggestions at the moment. I will probably keep 1 of the tier bonuses as a flame splinters like it is now. But, it is currently just a "more of the same" for each tier bonus. Alternatively, I could see about swapping the shrapnel effect on bombard onto powder keg and put the flame splinters there. Increased range and larger aoe would be good bonuses that will make the skill more versatile. I will look at revamping the skill (though currently I am distracted by Terraria 1.2).
Ozymandias 3. okt. 2013 kl. 15:34
ah well as it turns out I was using a slightly older version where powder keg was a 1 point skill no tier bonuses so take my suggetions with a grain of salt. still keep up the fantastic job, this is easily one of my top five favorite mods i've ever used on any game.

The Dread Pirate is most certainly at the same level as the Far East Monster Hunter class in terms of quality.

Hey I'm trying my Focus Based Menace pirate again, and I was wondering about the mechanics of the "explosive round" thing from the gunpowder specialist passive talent. Can that proc off of my abilities or is it only for attacks?
