Filipino and Japanese Focuses and Events.
PHILIPPINES Focus and Events.

1) Spain unlocks the first focus called "Foreign students" (first focus) where Filipino elite students or the "Intellegiencia" start going abroad to Europe in order to study. This of course increases the awareness they have for their place in the world when introduced to liberal ideas.

2) Dr. Jose Rizals event "Noli me Tangre" (book publishing) fires once the above focus is completed. He is basically one of these elite students who arrive back from Europe, filled with ideas about independence from Spain and self-rule for the Filipino people. Spain can then either choose to imprison Rizal (put him under house arrest) or Execute him in public. If the later is chosen, then the Filipino people will be further enraged and this in turn would give negative effects to Spain.

3) The event "Aguinaldo and the KKK - Katipunan" fires, which in turn causes extreme rebellion throughout the Philippines (spawning rebels like the CSA), thus giving negative effects in stability and unrest to the player if playing as Spain. The longer these rebels remain, the more instability is given to Spain. However, this would present itself as an opportunity for a US player to intervene once the Spanish - American war with Cuba triggers or if it is at war with Spain. If the US intervenes, then it has the chance to annex the Philippines outright giving it political power. However, it can only intervene if it has triggered the Spanish - American war focus and if it is at war with Spain and if it does decide to annex the Philippines, then negative modifiers are added in the form similar to those placed on Spain. Otherwise it cannot intervene.

4) A final event "The fall of Intramuros" (Old Manila Citadel) falls, which in turn grants Spain with two options. Either they continue the fight, thus further giving them negative effects in stability, unrest etc or yield and grant independence to the Filipino people. If Spain choses to grant independence, then the Philippine nation is created with Aguinaldo as the Presiden if Jose Rizal was assasinated. However, Spain can chose Jose Rizal to act as governor general of a commonwealth of the Philippines similar to how the US controlled the Philippines after WW2. This is because Rizal didn't really want the Philippines to declare independence so soon, even though he wrote Noli me Tangre. It was Aguinaldo who really wanted independence right away, which prompted the US to invade it. This would allow Spain to keep the Philippines in the style of a dominion like the British Raj and this would in turn give anyone a chance to play as the Philippines. Later on in the game, the player can either gain independence from Spain through a declaration of war or through peaceful means via a final event.

JAPAN Focus and Events.

1) Four focuses are made for Japan. The first two are titled "Glorious Isolation" or "Trade with the Nanban", the latter not triggering the arrival of the Americans in Japan since Japan would be open to trading with the West. If however the other focus is completed, then this would trigger and begin a series of events relating to US ships arriving in Japan and forcing it to open and trade with the west.

2) An event fires "Black Ships Sighted" where US ships led by Commodore Matthew C.Perry arrives off the coast of Edo (Tokyo) bay, granting the player of Japan two options. Either open Japan for trade with the west or the US declares war of Japan. If the first option is triggered, then the Player gets added bonus in research whilst at the same time being given free tech by the US in both Military weapons, military theory and Industry (the steam engine perhaps?)

3) An event fires which triggers Japan to modernise and which unlocks a series of modernisation events for Japan. These modernisation events can be random added bonus events.

4) Another event fires where Japan must chose to accept the "unequal treaties" levied on it by the west or to fight the west. This would mean a declaration of war between Japan, the US, Britain, France and Germany (if it exists). If Japan does accept the unequal treaties, then negative effects will be added to Japan with regards to stability and trade. However, there would be a boost in research and diplomatic relations between Japan and the west.

5i) Two further focuses are created for Japan. "The Meiji restoration" focus and "Let's keep the Shogun". The first focus provides Japan with civilian and military factories, military techs and research bonuses, (boosting industrial capacity and decreasing research time) and grants them with a new portrait of the Emperor Meiji. However, Japan als gets negative effects with regards to diplomatic relations with the West. It will suffer a -50 in relations with the US, UK, Fra and Germany. This is because the west did not want Japan to be their equal.

5ii) If Japan however choses "Let's keep the Shogunate" focus, then negative effects in unrest, stability (opposite to the ones above) are given to Japan. However, positive bonuses in relations with the west are added, which equals to +100 relations with the West. This is because the west preferred a Japan open to trade but as a country it could push around.
