Also, reffering the the courier as they wouldn't solve the issue, portrait still exists.
To specify further, what the Enclave submod wasn't exactly as ambitious, but pretty much after electing the president you get a few events for the backstory, I think it was who kept him as a slave (you got a wargoal later against them) how did he escape (gives you a bonus, one of them would help throughout the game) and what his claim to fame is (gives another bonus).
But I think it could be reasonable to have one event decide the gender, which would alter all portraits of the Courier, pick a couple traits (Wild Wasteland could be included to make some strange options come up in the future, and then some other things can give you more options in the future) and then you could decide who shot you. This would take work, but It would be really cool and might set a standard for future submods. I would replay this a bunch if that was added to see all the various options and such.
