First, it replaces the standard gender icons with it's own gender icons. It does this by having its own copies of interface/title/female.png and interface/title/male.png
Those files overwrite the vanilla gender icons. Also, there seems to be 4 pairs of gender icons, so I have no idea which ones are the intended ones.
Second, although the .species file tries to call for armor items like "Darkboundoutfit1chest", there are actually absolutely no armor files in this mod at all.
Third, I can't figure how the species head and shoulder icons that get used in the species selection menu aren't working. But I also can't understand what is being depicted in those files since the referenced files clearly aren't depicting a head of any kind. It looks more like an eye?
