I figured it might help to open a thread dedicated to suggestions, so that the comment section is less cluttered.

When posting a suggestion, please try include your rationale for why it would be beneficial to gameplay!

Expansion/Fork: Life Support

Description

This mod seems to work similarly to vanilla vitals machines, where an electrically powered building supplements a hospital's efficacy by buffing stats. Expanding on this, similar buildings with a focus on ICU-type life support could offer a less expensive way to prolong the lives of terminally ill pawns before cryptosleep caskets are viable.

Examples

Mechanical Ventilator - an invasive device which forces air into the patient's lungs.
Image: https://raw.githubusercontent.com/kchou94/rimworld-mod-assets/master/iv/experimental/vent/mechanical-ventilator.png[

  • Breathing - when a pawn is unable to breathe, this machine helps
  • Pain - for simplicity, ventilated pawns are intubated instead of receiving a tracheostomy. Having a constant tube in your throat is painful. Consider using IV painkillers/sedatives to reduce this.
  • Mood Penalty - "There's a tube stuck in my throat and a machine forcing air into my lungs. What a terrible feeling!" - Perhaps different thoughts if sedated

Dialysis Machine - connected to the patient's bloodstream, this device helps filter blood.

  • Blood Filtration - replaces kidney function
  • Mood Penalty - "I'm reliant on this machine, but at least it keeps me going."
  • Note: liver dialysis also exists - it works similary, but filters different things

Heart Lung Bypass - a machine which skips the heart and lungs, replacing the functionality of both.

  • Blood Pumping - the machine pumps the blood for the patient
  • Breathing - while technically breathing is the action of inhaling and exhaling air, in this case it could cover oxygenation as well. The blood is passed through an artifical lung to oxygenate it before returning to the patient's bloodstream.
  • Mood Penalty - "My lungs and heart have been replaced by a machine! This is completely unnatural.

Gameplay

These machines would work to extend the life of terminal pawns, similar to how cryptosleep caskets are used. However, despite being cheaper than cryptosleep, these all require electricity to function. Players would need to consider backup power in order to keep life support online in case of an emergency.

Loving the suggestions there. As soon as I can I'll try putting this into code. Although, some questions - life support should be extremely intensive on the power system. How much do you think? I reckon about 300W per machine, too much? Too little? What about the material requirements? Components/Steel/Plasteel? How much?

Now the more technical questions: each IV so far buffs every single pawn in range. For life support machines each one should probably only work if the pawn is incapable of breathing / blood filtering or heart beating. Correct? That means that the pawn needs to be able to live before being killed by their injuries. There's a mod that does this (Death Rattle) and so it might be required to work with the life support additions. Thoughts on this?

Thanks for that. Huge amount of effort clearly has gone into it. Also, thanks for making the sprites again. I can see you're invested in my mod and that feels great :)

I think there should be an upkeep for the IVs instead of a power draw.

After researching all the IVs can we research a drip that does all 4 types?
kyoukopan  [developer] 4 Jul, 2018 @ 8:24pm
@Finnskii what do you mean upkeep? Like how fueled stuff needs to be refilled?

@Renousim as an alternative, I think it would be cool to "combine" IV drips. Like 2 bags on one pole. Although in practice it would probably just be separate "buildings" for each combo
Finnskii 5 Jul, 2018 @ 12:59pm
Yes exactly, like the generators

I suggested combination cause my hospitals are a bit messy because I have the mod for medical stuff like surgery lamps and tools. So I have 4 IVs with a vitals monitor, lamp, and tools all surrounding a bed lol
Knight  [developer] 5 Jul, 2018 @ 4:48pm
@Renousim I'd say that's balanced, though. Don't you think? If you could place every machine next to a single hospital bed then there would never be any kind of specialisation or balance. Perhaps try making individual room/areas that each specialise in different medicare.
kyoukopan  [developer] 5 Jul, 2018 @ 6:54pm
I agree with that. Not being able to use all of the IVs at once seems good gameplay-wise and should hopefully encourage variety instead of allowing people to apply all the buffs to every bed. It would be interesting to able combining IV drips, but it would make them too powerful and IMO less interesting.

I like the idea of being able to SWITCH what's in the IVs. So you still have to pick one but it's one object, if thand you'd select which buff you want for your pawns, depending on what you need the most.

I think being able to switch IV bags and a system "for those who want to be overpowered" an IV with all 4 bags on it oh and IV bags for people looking not to cheat that have two bags

I like your mod very much. I want to help you with Chinese translation. How do I contact you?

Can blood be harvest from colonists or prisoners?
ShazamKnight 28 Jan, 2019 @ 8:17am
Is there a way to make them inactive unless they are linked to a bed? Kind of like how Dubwise has the option to link toilets/showers to bed owners in the same room or just make them free for all? Love this mod btw! It'd be cool if there could be a procedure called "Donate Blood" to keep blood stores up and keep it more balanced. Same thing with food, you could have a cooking job for the nutrition bag, drug crafting job for the painkiller and antibiotics.

Or add ventilators for when people have their lungs destroyed if utilized fast enough, same with a cardiopulmonary bypass for the heart, or dialysis for kidneys, etc. This mod could be expansive, and if I knew a THING about modding I'd certainly lend a hand.

Love your mod btw, thanks for keeping it going, this broke gamer appreciates it!

I'd love to see an anesthetic IV that can keep a patient sedated, helpful for controlling problem prisoners or addicts in recovery.
