Rulers no longer in family tree
As the title says. Noticed I had a succession issue creeping up, ruler was getting old-ish and all sons died to infant mortality. My dead brother had a lot of healthy sons but the game wouldn't let me declare any of them an heir, and all my adoption options were other old guys with no sons. Sure enough I died and the succession went somewhere random, to a very old governor.
Ever since then I haven't been able to declare an heir, or interact with my rulers in the family tree panel. Since the succession is random as far as I can tell, I keep getting 75-80 year old rulers who die the next turn, continually lowering my overall control. Now my control is like 6% and all my armies integrity are shot, I'm having to execute every turn despite having good commanders and loyalty perks for integrity. Basically, my campaign's ♥♥♥♥♥♥.

Bummer to get this far into a campaign for it to become uncontrollable like that. I was having an awesome game as Georgia, carved out an empire north of the Caucasus against the odds beating back wave after wave of Mongols and Khwarezm, and was just about to get to the high era after finally stabilizing my territory. It's been a while since I've played so I'm not sure if this is a vanilla issue, but wtf? Why couldn't I declare an heir from among my family (when i still had one)? And why did it lock me into a random oldest guy in the faction succession loop without giving me any control to manage the situation? Without console commands a situation like this just stops a campaign in its tracks. Does anyone know any creative workaround to salvage a campaign still and get a controllable, interactable ruler back? Or is this just game over for a campaign?

One may use SaveParser to edit a character's age - if you know how to use it of course.
You can download it from sourceforge here:
