Food gathering difficulty greatly increased?
I like this mod in theory but playing it I seem to be running out of food waaay easier than in normal Banished. Am I just imagining it or does this mod greatly increase the difficulty of obtaining food? I was using the same strategy for gathering food early game as in normal Banished but in normal I was able to maintain a foodstook between 2000 and 1000 food throughout the year only occasionaly falling below 1000 (at this stage of the game with comparable setup). Yet with this mod I've got 0 food. It was right after the harvest (only had one small field, most of my food came from fishing, hunting and gathering, but still) yet I didn't seem to have any food from that either (I wasn't paying super close attention to it but last I looked the harvest seemed to be going fine and was being carried into the storehouse).

Is this a bug or what? It's annoying because I like the mod but this makes it unplayable for me.

Actually, this mod is not for the faint of heart... many things are a bit harder than vanilla but it is far from unplayable. You'll have to rely on farming very early... in fact, I build my first field as soon as the forester/gatherer/hunter/woodcutter/housing pentateuque is done, so that the farmer could start working at the start of year 2.
A full fledged gatherer gets almost 1000 food/year. A single farmer 15X8 field gets about 800...

there is also a "o h s h i t food" button in the remove toolbar. you can send your laborers to harvest food (same for deadwood/firewood)

Is the food harvested with this "ohsh*tfood" button the same food that a gatherer from a gatherer's hut normally harvests on their own? Or is it separate? I've noticed that a lot of food highlighted with this tool continues to stay around my gatherer's hut even when I have someone working there. Makes me wonder how efficient that worker is being. I don't want to have to micro my wild food gathering all the time (at least until I get other sources up and running).

yes it is the same food. but if you ask to clear a zone where you dont have a gatherer hut there ?
it is not for micro your wild food gathering, it is an "in case oh sheet" button if your are in trouble,

There is so many possibility with this mod for food, it become so easy !
it is just to not think and imagine 2 citizens should feed a pop of 40 /shrug

Yeah this mod is way too hard for me, i'm too much of a scrub.
It is constant starvation or not enough logs; which ♥♥♥♥♥ tools; which ♥♥♥♥♥ everything.

Any advice on how to make this easier for a noob?

Hello ,
Like all others full mod : the north , rk editor's choice ...etc .. it 's always a different game !!
So you must ever test it and LEARN IT !!
For my part : I already made a city with all the jewellers to make all the differents gold jewelry !
Very fun to do !!
Of course , I must have a lot of mine and niners ...So the residual population do the classic :food , clothes, tools , and heating .
And the main objectives at the beginning on "Banished" is to get : 100% educated , the best tools (carbon here ) ,the more warm clothes .
After you can make what you want ...

@Plantagons Remember that ONE people can manage a 15X8 farm and that not only foresters can chop trees. At the very beginning, I always put a lone forester on "plant only" so he make me a plentiful forest and get my workers to clean the zone where I plan to build my village. Then, I progressively add foresters and switch to "plant/cut"...

Good idea. This mod has been a tough one for me to master. Running out of resources seems to happen way to often. Your idea is like, 'why didn't I think of that?' G8 thx.

Yes. I do. Because of the 'uneducated penality' I will stiffle growth for the sake of education. Banished is, for me, a game that requires both addressing short term issues, and playing, excuse the double entendre, 'the long game.'

It also helps to draw out your population growth. With this mod in place I've also found myself bleeding food out over winter even after a strong harvest. You may benefit from staggering your house building until you have surplus food and surplus firewood, since the villagers blow through that like no tomorrow in this mod. In my current game I'm at year 13 with 78 villagers and have a great stock of 9k food going on.

Speaking abour blowing thru resources, I go for the charcol to heat homes.

I also thought this mod made the game harder, and my friend, who has played this game more than me, thought the mod was a little too hard. However, I definitely like this mod more than CC. For me, CC was just too confusing. RK's mod may be hard, but it's definitely not confusing. At least it doesn't have those Housewares and Building Material items. That's what I hated most about CC. They try to make the buildings appear cheaper than they really are.

Also, I kinda second using coal for heat. When I can't get enough firewood, mining is better than the alternative.

@wander
I like CC. I agree with you, the housewares, and related, production chains are cumbersome. I think the intention was to make constructing the more complex buildings more realistic. The game code restricts how many diofferent components may be used to build a structure. By using the housewares device, CC requires more than the max types of resources to make the higher buildings. I get the 'why' of it - but it is a pain, sometimes.

I use charchol for heat - not coal. I hate mining as it kills off banshees, and werars down thair tools more quickly. Whats your experience using coal to heat homes?
