NPC's infinitely spawning in a village

So I've decided to attack an NPC village from my raft.
I've killed over 200 of them, and they seem to respawn instantly. as there are still about 100+ attacking my raft. and that for a village of 6 buildings.

Is there a setting to get them to stop spawning immediately after I kill them?
