Suggestion: Pirate bases spread toward the player's base (or other targets)
Right now pirates spread outward from an existing base in all directions. I believe it would be better if, instead, they spread *toward* the player's base, or other raiding opportunities. So each new base would be progressively closer and closer to your location until eventually they were right on top of you.

I think this would be a big improvement.

For one, it would provide more urgency and better synergy with other features. The mod description says raiders will threaten more frequent raids and extort money from you if they have nearby bases. In my current game the pirates are pretty far away from me (like 25+ tiles) and even though they've grown by about 8 bases, it hasn't really made any difference at all. The closest one is still like 20 tiles away.

There are like 8 bases that I *should* feel compelled to wipe out, but they're not a threat and it would be kind of a slog to get to them. It's a "bigger" threat that will require more work to wipe out one day, but it's no more urgent of a threat than it was on the first day.

Secondly, it would be much more realistic. Pirates are going to go where there are opportunities for more raiding. Having four bases all clustered around the same remote area would be a terrible idea, as it would just mean more competition for fewer resources. Far better to set up outposts and bases close to good targets like faction bases and trade routes.

Valid idea, would be a nice improvement. I'll see about adding some bias to where they spawn.

I thaught world events generally spawn within a certain radius of the players home tile anyway. and as pirates are spread randomly all over the world map they sort of automatically look like they are trying to encircle you with outposts.
It might be easier to change the extortion radius instead so that they are trying to "use" their outposts as launch pads for the assults
or possible add the extortion radius check to outposts rather than just the main bases?

They tend to, yes.

also i was thinking if you wanted an extreme threat you could have a crossover to rimatomics, where the pirates build punisher artillery turrets that shell your home tile from their outposts. or possibly build nukes from their magnum opus / home tile = )

is caravan ambush more likely within certain number of squares of a pirate oupost? i guess this would make them act more like a siege camp that is trying to isolate / encircle your home base.
