Funny you mention Mesa since; They use the exact same materials ;) (this and mesa).
%wise this has a lot more armored bits then mesa.
Obviously I can't just stick batteries or "pieces" of metal if theres no geo to support it.
Plating his chest? sure but then you have a coat thats strapped over a metal chest . the metal chest then needs to continue below the "buckles" on the coat. So then you need to armor the legs. On a pair of legs that has the painfull obvious geo of a pair of flaired legs. (check the bottom).
Quilted cloth sounds good in theory, its something I tried and it's just weird. he's basically wearing a slightly sci-fied up duster. Padding it looked out of place. It's also something that i've done to death (harrow/mesa)
Aaaaannyways, what im trying to say is that there's (in my mind) a good reason for my choices.
Not saying those are the right choices (hindsight can be a terrible thing) but the choices made a produxt that im happy with:)
