Chernobyl: Chapter One
Chernobyl: Chapter One - Review by Endless
★★★★ 4/5: So close to perfection yet so far

Chernobyl is one big bastard that's absolutely gorgeous to look at, and I'm saying this truly. This has to be one of the most beautifully detailed and visually striking campaigns ever. With a total of 5 maps, this campaign is not small at all, and each map is designed with such a fascinating layout that its size is simply admirable, but, above all, it is the quality of detail, geometry and the use of new, custom assets that simply raise the level of the content to ten. From new models, textures and special events. When you play Chernobyl, you are teleported to Chernobyl. The closest I've seen to a graphical representation of this environment is in Metro 2033, but now in Left 4 Dead 2 and filled to the brim with zombies.

Chernobyl is an interesting example as well, a sort of dichotomy that seems to suffer a bit from success. The levels are quite ambitious and epic in scale, but, unfortunately, outside of the visual aspect, they are somewhat flawed in terms of development and execution. First of all: bugs. Chernobyl has a high amount of bugs ranging from simple physics issues to serious problems where your game will crash. At least for me it crashed twice on the first map, and other users have had worse luck. If your PC is not well equipped, I'm afraid you will have a somewhat inadequate experience, since the maps are extremely demanding and have some performance problems in certain areas, probably due to the complicated geometry and lighting.

You could say that the sacrifice of having visual fidelity is having to ruin certain scenes with some instability. Which can be quite annoying, particularly for low gamma users. If an original campaign is going well for you, the Chernobyl campaign will tank your resources, so watch out.

Another problem, which I consider bigger than the bugs, is the gameplay. While I can highly praise the visual quality of Chernobyl, I think it fails considerably in offering a fair balance of gameplay. The maps are designed to be challenging, I can accept that, but there comes a certain point where challenge ceases to be challenge and becomes a competition of sadism. Hordes impossible to escape, zombies spawning literally seconds later, little ammo or useful items and radiation attacking you without warning. Particularly annoying is the fact that the zombie spawn is made in such a way that you just leave a room and the second you come back it's completely full of zombies.

Playing this campaign on Expert is almost impossible, unless you have a good group of skilled friends. And forget about playing it with bots! Some scenes require a certain intelligence that bots are sadly lacking.

That's why I've decided to give that title to this review. Chernobyl presented enormous potential to be one of the most epic campaigns in history, but there is still some work to be done to truly reach those ranks. On the other hand, it's still a great campaign that, bugs and problems aside, is extremely engaging.
