Things to try to have a decent ESI experience
This mod is getting a bad rep. I'm well into 1939 and it has yet to crash. I do have some tips if you want to try them. I also have mods with it, so I'm giving it a good stress. Player Led Confs, some icon mods, an anime overlay, and Maid Corps (one of the better crafted mods I've ever seen, for any game, and I'm not just talking waifus). Anyway, here's what I've found:

1. Rule I is Be Patient. The game runs about the speed for me of 2-3 on vanilla. Yes, it will pause briefly every 24 hrs. It will have a longer pause at one month (my autosave point). Do not expect to play a quick game then sleep for work tomorrow. I'm retired, so I don't worry about that stuf.

2. At startup, NEVER choose 50%. If you do, the game will likely pause for a LONG time before continuing. Seems counter-intuitive, since if you're only gonna get 50% of the states to participate it should run better. Nope. 50% is literally slideshow mode. Occasionally it will work. VERY occasionally, and not well. I choose 75% and there's no pause as it goes to the next screen, and it runs smoothly (within the parameters stated above).

3. When you start the game, after you're all set up, on Jan 2 you'll get a message to save the game and reload the save. DO THIS! It prevents the April crash that a lot of mods get, AND it prevents the phantom factory problem.

4. You'll get a WHOLE lot of transmission msgs, and it can become frustrating to get your clicks constantly interrupted. What I do is wait for the batch of transmissions to finish (be patient), indicated by the last one being white text instead of grey. The game will have paused (settings). I close the big event ones and, if I have things I want to do or move the map, I do it while the game is paused, then click thru the batch, rinse and repeat. You'll find the wars come in groups, with calm periods in between. I run at speed 4 and hit the space bar whenever I want to do anything.

I hope this will help. The mod works as well as can be expected with the amount of processing it has to do. I have an I7 and my machine runs cool. Since the only other mod like it never finishes wars, always leaving you at 96-99% with nothing left to take, if you want to try this unique experience, and have a good machine, it can be fun. I don't use Battle Royale.

Thank you, Mr. Trees, for keeping the mod updated.

By the way... spoiler: California is the best starting state. Grab Nevada and you've got everything (except rubber, and you've got a LOT of oil to process.) ;-)
