He's essential while he's your follower, but becomes protected when he leaves your party (meaning only you can kill him). If you attack him a few times, he'll leave your party. Be careful of area-of-effect spells like J'zargo's scrolls, they can aggro him and cause this problem. Alternatively, if you're trying to use a follower management mod on Lucien, that's the more likely culprit.
