would there be anyway to make this work in singleplayer?

You can play by yourself but having the singleplayer option selected no. To fix it all you need to do is select the gamemode, then go to start game then click the top right then click multiplayer then start up the map. Its still basically single player, its not a public server and that should fix the problem.
