Key pieces in 4.3.0

I am playing as Hexaghost, 49th room (campfire before 3rd boss), got 3 key pieces and more than 150 souls.
In previous run I noticed, that when I break them they no longer display as broken pieces. Should I break them to open the doors to 4th boss?
Did this mechanic get changed in latest update?
