Heh, no worries, it's all part of a good character story, and if you like Alexandria, you can aim to get it in the future by trading another city you will have conquered. This way you will have a city that already loves you.
I think there's still a chance trading will be refused even if you have a better city to trade. Some lords just tell me flat out they are not interested in trading a specific settlement away and that's it, but it might work.
Of course, the nuclear option: become the Emperor, then tell the governor it's your city now. :)
