The map doesn't hold your hand through the map, It just tells you "That is a key item" so go explore and find out what it does for where it goes and you should have it in mind since you might not be a goldfish but i'm starting to doubt myself.
The map would have been equally "as good" as you stated if you did not take that long to actually figure out the minor puzzles. And the english was actually good for him being Russian, Ive seen far worse.
