Can pedestrians trigger lights?
I assume there is no way to make traffic signals count pedestrians waiting as traffic?
It's a big limitation to not be able to tell a signal to switch state based on the presence of pedestrians, so the only real workaround is just a timer or to change the light based on when cars are not present, neither of which is particularly elegant or efficient.

Is it theoretically possible to use waiting pedestrians as an input value?

Interesting idea. TM:PE/vanilla does not count pedestrian waiting for a signal to switch so custom code will be required. There might be a problem with creating correct and accurate trigger and also differentiate moving pedestians from those waiting for signal, so I'm not sure if I'll implement that feature.
Currently I'm refactoring traffic light code (hopefully for v.11.7), so this might be the best time to consider that use case.
Thanks for suggestion, I'll take a look if and what is possible without introducing performance issues.
