My stranded friend found a way down by hopping across pipes (Thanks, Questionable Ethics) and onto the elevator at the bottom, and I am unsure if this was an intentionally created alternative path for stranded players.
Needed to unscribe this... and other maps to fix the problem... I don't know why installing subscribed maps crash the game and steam.
This seems to be a bug in the game itself. I've gotten plenty of crashes, but never had steam hang. L4D2 also seems to be really bad at corrupting some ofthe game files when you download it from Steam, so validating your cache until it comes out clean could help.
There should be a left4dead2_crash_<date>.mdmp file generated in steamapps\common\left 4 dead 2\ every time it craches, if you can upload one generated by the steam-hanging crash, I might be able to get a clue on what is happening.
