Luckily, after a few turns, a friend arrives to help him...
And it's still uncovered who is the traitor.
And in the background more details about the stolen project pop up, maybe at some point at mainstream media (could it be weaponized, use in an unconventional attack?). It makes the player realize how deep is the ♥♥♥♥ Davis is in :)
I plan to do allot of side stuff make the game feel more dynamic, and as such thats the kinda area im asing for added help in :P
... I think I just explained the plot of Yojimbo actually.
Quick run down:
Mr. Johnson's Milk Route
Reward:
1 karma
900 nuyen
Run:
Drop off the package off. Talk/bribe/hit past the guard. Man in Hat talks the package.
"Looking good kid, a few more of these and I can think of giving you the big runs."
Repeat the run...
"Hey Mr. Dependable! Quicker then a corporate mailroom."
Repeat the run...
"Say thrid time is the charm but this is the last one. Show me you can sweat the details and I can line you up real nuyen."
Repeat the run....HOLY CRAP LONESTAR/ASSASSIN!
- "I got a job to do..." -fight three to one odds. Rewarded one karma a person.
- "Wait... you just want this? Here." - no fight. Reward 3k nuyen.
- Time to run... - no karma and no nuyen as you race to leave the area/fight.
The Johnson who offered said missions are gone. Yet it is a really quick set up for what seems like a grinding flaw on your part. Or we get the greedy ones who expect a big pay off.
Based on the tone I think you are going for a working class feel. Namely things can work out but you have a few crappy jobs here and there.
My one attempt is similar to yours really. Start as a corporate guy and steal 100k nuyen then get arrested and lose everything. So it is like "run" to survive kinda stuff.
Also I take it you have a core team in your scenario? You have two clear voices and two set pieces that work. I want to know about the troll in the glasses.
+1 each time its completed
When its trigger 4 its the big showdown.
im suing a diferent recruitment process then the original hiring screen because i feel its a bit tacky, i like the old school approach of walking up to somone talking to them and then asking them to come with you.
Heck you could throw another loop and give players an actual number of when the milk runs change to bigger runs.
Mr. J- "I will tell you the deal I ell everyone, give me five solid runs. No issues, no problems, no nothing. Five solid jobs and then I can consider you for the big stuff."
So now issues on run four are less expected. As I think about it the "last" job always goes wrong, but hardly the second to last job.
Now not knowing where Davis will be operating out of I will go generic bar...
Bartender:
1. "What ya need ace?"
-Drinks
-Company
- Info
-Work
a. "Ah, well I would not know about that. I am an honest SINner." (the bartender leans in close as an clean glass is set before Davis, well an empty glass for sure) "There is a muzzleneck in the corner. I think his name is Johnson."
Mr. Johnson:
1. "Can I help you?"
I."I need a job."
a. (For a moment the man loses all of his composure as he begins laughing. He slams his hand on the table spilling some of his top shelf as he looks up at Davis with a wide grin.) "Oh that was..." (continues to laugh) "That was good newbie. Walking up like you got a right."
I.I "I just need some work. Can you help me out here?"
- see B.
II."I think you can."
b. (Mr. Johnson runs his finger along the rim of his glass looking over Davis with a critical eye.) "I have some Business to be taken care of. However I would like to stress that my Business is not for some Bushi Bosozuki but a professional. If you show me you are able to able to function as I require I can get you Business. You do not need to be Aces but you do have to be useful."
II.I "I can be very useful for anyone who fills up my credstick."
B.2 (Mr. Johnson leans to his side and begins drumming his fingers over his cyberdeck until a tiny chime rings from Davis' own deck) I have given you a data file. This is a simple milk run." (Mr. Johnson reaches into his suit and sets down a thin package folded up in butcher paper) "Finish it as soon as you can."
II.I.I "What is it?"
B.2.1 "Questions like that do not inspire my trust in you."
-END
II.I.I "I will be back shortly."
-END
III."You looked like a new face around here. Wanted to introduce myself. I am (Shadowrunner nickname)/Davis."
c. "Aren't you polite?" (Mr. Johnson seems be staring past Davis taking in all around him.) "Shall I assume this respectful attitude is alongside a request of some sort newbie?"
III.I "Well, uh, yeah it is. If you got work I can do it."
-See B.
RUN:
Location is docks, strip club anything already handled. You must get past the bouncer or the guard.
Guard: "Sorry, this place is restricted."
I. "I left something in my locker, can you help me out here?"
A. "Where is your locker?"
I.I "Warehouse A of course!"
A.2 "Get out of here before I get mad. Wasting my time..."
I.II "In the building."
A.3 "Which building?"
I.II.I "The only build there is..."
A.4 "Well, look you got five minutes. So peddle it."
I.II.II "Look it is right there," (point behind the guard and when his back is turned knock him out)
II. "I found this credstick and I think you own it."
B. "How much did you find...uh, sir?"
II.I "10 nuyen"
-See A4
II.II "120 nuyen."
-See A4
II.II "500 nuyen."
B.2 "I, I think I have my break coming up right right."
III. "I need to..." (point behind him) "What is that?" (knock out guard when he looks"
IV. "Too bad..." (pull out gun and start shooting)
- Think dead guard works here over a fire fight.
Davis goes to the far side of the docks. There is a man there.
Tully: "You got my stuff?"
I. "Right here."
A. (The man takes the package from Davis and does not open it. Instead he feels around it until touching the edge.) "There we go. Here tell Mr. J, Tully is real pleased about this."
I.I "Who is Tully?"
B. "I am."
I.I.I -See I.II
I.II "Will do." (recieve 3,000 nuyen)
Now repeat as needed with Johnson. The run is guard-delivery-3k payment-Johnson pockets 2,100."
Last run:
Docks... no guard is on duty. So just walk on in. At the end is "Tully" yet when you get closer the fellow goes "NOW!" Out comes two others. Big guns clearly not there to talk.
Reg-Neg: "You have an item I require. Hand it over and well shall be on our way."
I. "I think not."
-engage combat. Reward 1-2 karma a kill.
II. "Look I am just the messenger. I got no clue what is inside of this thing."
A. "That is good for you. Look hand it over and I will give you what we took off the guy who was here earlier."
II.I "I just... all 3,000 nuyen?"
A.2 (All the tension in the air seems to vanish at the utterence of those words) "Sure thing, actually no. It is like 2,989 nuyen as we bought a few soykaf's from the vending machine inside."
II.I.I "Not my place to judge." (Davis hands over the package as a credstick is given to him by the runner.)
A.2.1 "You need us to rough you up so this looks good?"
II.I.I.I "I am good...uh, have a nice night?"
A.2.1.1 "You too."
- End, the three have a mild conversation along the lines of "thank god that went easy." and "all this for NERPS." -REWARD of 2,989 nuyen
III. "You know I never wanted this..." (run away) NO REWARD
Returning to the start Mr. Johnson is gone and gone forever.
Trying to add both a shadow and meat world element to a scene can cripple both as to what textural level you can provide... Further, it puts a lot more control in the creators hands as it relates to 'who the runners are', since Davis really isn't a 'big name' in the biz yet, anyways. For now, he's the guy I hired to do my decking... I'm just playing him.
Also, these side matrix runs could implement more of the 'real world in digital space' feel of SR. Like blending matrix skins into 'meatworld elements' to show corps paying top nuyen on designing their digital representations.
Clearly this isn't so much a run idea, as... food for thought. And probably not as useful as I hope it will be. It's the sort of thing I've been toying with in the editor, though. Since strong matrix content would be wiz. And what you've done so far is shiney.
Would also like MORE HUMOR injected into everything. It's a dreary world, surely that's impacted the wit of the community.
Like going to the matrix and finding a group of RPG players? Say the old KOTDT gag?
GM: you come upon a wonderful garden. Brids singing, and a gazeebo on the hill."
Mage: "What is the gazeebo doing?"
GM: "Nothing."
Mage: "I think I will kill it and use its hide for something..."
GM: "......okay"
Or do you mean organic dialogue humor? If so do you avoid the Shadowrun slang? Or do you try to make such slang funny?
