Kurin, The Three Tailed Fox

Working on a translation, Help needed.
I have been able to pull apart the mod files and found the translation file, and while I know how to format things, Google Translate and my years of creative writing classes can only take me so far, I'm wondering if there was someone that could help me with effective translation (compared to Google's literal translation) and cultural differences that are passing over my head.

I'll throw stuff that I've translated and smoothed the edges on up here for people to look at and give feedback on:

Backstory Title: This is what shows up in the field on a pawn's character sheet.

Changed Title: What I've changed that to.

Short Title: This is what shows up as the pawn's descriptor (the thing that shows up under their name, like Engineer, it's usually what their 'job' is).

Original Text: The original Korean description pulled straight from the file

Smoothed translation: What I've written to replace it with what I think both holds true to the original intent and the differences in how English is spoken and read.

[PAWN_nameDef] means that the character's name will be placed here automatically in-game.
[PAWN_pronoun] will be replaced by He/Her and is determined by the pawn's gender.
[PAWN_possessive] is replaced with His/Her and is also determined by the pawn's gender.

Backstory Title: Kurin 여우무리 일원

Changed Title: Kurin Vigilante

Short Title: Vigilante

Original Text:
여우무리 자경단 이야기는 어린 쿠린들에게 가장 인기있는 TV애니메이션이었습니다. [PAWN_nameDef] 는 방과 후 여우무리 자경단을 만들어, 친구들과 공터와 골목을 돌아다니며 지방 도시의 평화를 지키는 수호자가 되었습니다. 치안이 워낙 좋아 별로 할 일은 많지 않았습니다만.

Smoothed translation:
Enthralled by the story of Fox Mugi Jagyedan, a popular children's show, [PAWN_nameDef] made [PAWN_possessive]self a costume and set out to keep the peace in their city. [PAWN_pronoun] didn't find much to do.

I'm having one issue with this: the direct translation references a 'a fox school after school', I have zero clue how to handle this because it almost sounds like a pop culture reference to me, though it could be that it's supposed to mean a pretend super-group of sorts, but I'm chopping it out and saying that they made a costume until I know how to handle it.

I cut the length down to allow for easier reading, and specifically lopped off some superfluous details that are unneeded in English or are easily inferred.

Backstory Title: Kurin 따돌려진 아이

Changed Title: Kurin A Drowned Child

Short Title: Drowned

Original Text:
[PAWN_nameDef]는 보기 드문 새파란 눈을 가진 아이였습니다. 쿠린 사이에서는 불길하다고 여겨진 증표로, 어린아이들부터 어른들까지 모두의 냉대와 차가운 시선 속에 외로운 아이로 자랐습니다.

Smoothed translation:
[PAWN_nameDef] was born with hauntingly pale blue eyes. Abandoned at an early age [PAWN_pronoun] grew up in the cold, ignored or feared by almost all. [PAWN_pronoun] came to view those who promised luxury with a caution.

This one has to be something cultural, the title translates directly as A Drowned Child. I can't find anything because google thinks I'm searching for news and not cultural works, so I had to guess and probably left my ignorance showing, please tell me if I'm even close to the original intent. I'm also not sure why the word ostentation was used, but I tried to capture it as well

Backstory Title: Kurin 비행청소년

Changed Title: Kurin Delinquent

Short Title: Delinquent

Original Text:
[PAWN_nameDef]는 어떤 아이들에게는 선망의 대상이면서, 선생님들에겐 큰 골칫거리인 쿠린이었습니다. [PAWN_pronoun]의 대표적인 악행으로는 청소당번 빼먹기, 선생님 말 안 듣기, 현관에서 신발 안 털고 들어오기 등이

Smoothed translation:
[PAWN_nameDef] seemed to be unstoppable, other children were envious to the things [PAWN_pronoun] got away with. [PAWN_possessive] actions often included dumpster diving, ignoring those around [PAWN_objective], and flinging mud. None were safe from [PAWN_nameDef]'s evil acts, and everyone knew it.

This one was fairly straight forward, stereotypical bully, granted I'm not exactly sure what 'shoveling in the shoe' means, but I figure flinging mud at people would be close enough.

There's a lot of stuff to translate, and with work I'm probably going to need several weeks to do it, but I'll try to keep up as best I can. If the mod author want's to slot stuff in as I go that would be great, or I'll end up building a zip with the files needed at the end and an install guide (because I really rather not add extra things onto people's modlists, my game already takes 3 minutes to load in).

"The Fox Herd Vigilante" is the name of the most famous TV animation among little kurins. [PAWN_nameDef] thus has decided to made up [PAWN_possesive] own Fox Herd vigilante with [PAWN_possesive] friends. [PAWN_nameDef] was a guardian of [PAWN_possesive] city, patroling backstreets and some vacant lots. [PAWN_nameDef] didn't find significant act to keep security because of good public order of city, though.

Korean to English translation will be something like this. I translated it. Feel sorry about errors on grammas; English is not my native language.

'A fox school after school' isn't that vague sentence. It just means that they made up vigilante after the school, literally.

P.S. There should be someone who is under translating this mod in Korean community. English to Korean is harsh, compare to Korean to English translation...

"따돌려진 아이" means "the victim of bullying"(or an outcast, a tormentee... whatever. I don't know a English word exactly stand for it). I don't have a clue why google translated it "drowned"... creepy.

about the word ostentation... ye. Neither I. Maybe google just choose synonym of display? Only Google knows.

Basically, She was bullied throughout the childhood because of her has uncommon blue eyes.

The last one, as you guessed, it's about bully. However, the point is triviality of her acts... "청소당번 빼먹기" (skipped her clean up duty), "선생님 말 안듣기"(did not pay attention to teacher), "신발 안 털고 들어오기"(didn't dust off her shoes).

shoveling in the shoe is maybe the translation of "신발 안 털고 들어오기".

Plus, the backstories of Kurin is filled with parody and memes. Kurin daughter of tofu store, for example, is parody of Erika Momotani, a porn actor famous in Korea with her meme.

Thank you for that, I figured 'fox school' was a vigilante group thing, the translation I was working with didn't have the word vigilante in it. I'm going to stick with Fox Mugi Jagyedan because it sounds like the name for a TV show.

Enthralled by the story of Fox Mugi Jagyedan, a popular children's show, [PAWN_nameDef] and [PAWN_pronoun] friends took to the streets to fight crime. They didn't find much to do.

WOW, the translation I got was completely different,

'[PAWN_nameDef] was an envy for some children, and Kurin, a big headache for teachers. [PAWN_pronoun] 's typical evil deeds include scavenging scum, not listening to the teacher, and shoveling in the shoe. Everyone was terrified.'

I assumed that the part about not listening to the teacher was mistranslated, and tried to get it in line with the others.

'[PAWN_nameDef] was a pain, [PAWN_pronoun] would refuse to help when it was time to clean up, refused to listen to her teachers, and never cleaned [PAWN_possessive] shoes.'

Ok, so Google has that one completely screwed up it's getting 따돌려진 아이 as 'a drowned child' and 따돌려진 as dashed (as in dashed away to somewhere else). I remembered there being a legend in Asia about vampires or something similar and the only way to find them was their bright blue eyes, enough lined up in my mind to have me jump in that direction, thank you for the clarification.

Also ostentation isn't really a synonym of display, it basically means 'to flaunt extreme wealth', and while I can see people getting display from flaunt, it's the difference between putting a plate that looks pretty in a window to lighting it up with a million-candela spotlight so they can see it on the moon.

Outcast would be a pretty good word for that in English, it's what I'll be using.

And this is why I needed help, there's going to be things I'll never understand because I don't know the reference.

I'm going to work on another three tonight if you're willing to look them over again.

You're doing better than some of the German kids I've taught, could use a little bit of work on sentence structure and your word choice is a little shaky sometimes, but readable none the less. If you'd like I could give you a few pointers.

Backstory Title: Kurin 빈민가 고아
Changed Title: Kurin Slumdog
Short Title: Slumdog

Original Text:
[PAWN_nameDef]는 쓰레기통을 뒤지고 곰팡이 핀 빵을 먹으며 연명하는 어린 시절을 보냈습니다. 어린이들을 도와 주는 시설도 있었지만 쿠린 공화국이 모든 국력을 이민선 제작에 쏟자 제대로 된 복지혜택을 받지 못하고 골목에 지은 골판지 박스 집에서 살았습니다.

Smoothed translation:
[PAWN_nameDef] spent [PAWN_possessive] childhood living in cardboard boxes while scrounging for scraps in dumpsters despite there being welfare systems in place to aid those in [PAWN_possessive]'s position.

Backstory Title: Kurin 공잡이
Changed Title: Kurin Baseball Fan
Short Title: Enthusist

Original Text:
야구 경기를 정말 좋아했던 [PAWN_nameDef]는 가장 큰 리그가 열리는 인간들의 국가에서 팬 팀을 쫓아다니는 팬보이였습니다. 매 경기마다 쫓아다니는 [PAWN_pronoun]는 카메라에 잡히기도 하며 조금씩 구단에 존재가 알려지다가, 팀의 볼보이로 활동하게 되었습니다.

Smoothed translation:
[PAWN_nameDef] really liked baseball. On weekends [PAWN_pronoun] could be found chasing the country's most successful team, often mistaken for being part of the support crew by the news. [PAWN_pronoun] eventually joined as a driver.

The title was going to be Fan or Enthusiast, and Enthusiast matches the original text more closely. He 'became a volvo of the team' popped up in the text, so I ran with it and that's why they're a driver.

Backstory Title: Kurin 동물원 아르바이터
Changed Title: Zookeeper
Short Title: Student

Original Text:
[PAWN_nameDef]는 고학생이었습니다. 많은 자매 때문에 집은 가난했고, 학비를 스스로 벌어 공부하기위해 동물원에서 작은 일들을 도왔습니다. [PAWN_pronoun]는 비교적 쉬운 초식동물을 돌보고 사료를 주는 일을 맡으며 돈을 벌고, 공부에도 열심이었습니다.

Smoothed translation:
[PAWN_nameDef] was an older student with many sisters. In order to support [PAWN_possessive] family [PAWN_pronoun] worked at a zoo tending to and feeding herbivores. [PAWN_nameDef] found interest in this and followed it as [PAWN_pronoun] field of study

The first one, slumdog has almost zero translation issue.

Kurin government focused on their resources to building an immigrant ship, prevent slumdog Kurin from appropriate welfare system.

"공잡이" means a ball girl. It seems to be google decided translate "볼보이"(It refers exactly same its English counterpart, a ball boy) as a Volvo. The modder didn't use the feminine form of the a ball boy; Korean didn't use feminine or masculine form of words.

Last one, "아르바이터" means part-timer. The main error of the translation is "an older student". "고학생" means "a self-supporting student". A little Kurin got a part-time job in zoo because of her harsh financial condition arised by her many sisters.

I don't know how to quote your translation like you did it. Hope you don't mind.

Plus. The Fox Mugi Jagyedan doesn't looks like Korean. If you want Korean-ish animation name, "Yeou Jagyungdan"(The romanization of a Korean word "fox vigilante") will be better.

I'll be using that, thank you.

I'll modify the baseball one, it's probably going to take me a while because Rimworld isn't really set up to handle gender outside of he/she as of the last time I checked.

I'll update the part-timer, there's a class built into the game already for it so it's actually better.

Thanks again for the looking through this stuff. I'm probably going to have to disappear for a couple of weeks, midterm tests are coming up and I probably should have been studying by now. I'll probably work on simpler stuff, like the item lists.
