PART 1: How to make a custom aurora borealis texture in Gimp2.
For this tutorial, you will need the following:

- Gimp 2 photo editor (free installation) and some basic experience in using it. Adobe Photoshop may work but could be missing some features - please do not ask me if you get stuck because I do not have it installed to know how to circumvent your issue.
- VTFEdit (can be found in the Nem's tools website - never download it from websites with ads/other scam downloads)
- Hammer Editor version mounted for garry's mod with basic experience.
- Knowledge of where your garry's mod directory is (ex. C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\GarrysMod\garrysmod
- Patience.

You can have fun with however you would like this texture to look. Flexibility is paramount for your sake, but if your are a beginner you may follow closely to these steps.

STEP 1: Open Gimp 2 editor and go to File>New>Image Size: width 1024px height 1024px. Press OK.

STEP 2: Now you will see a blank, white background layer. First you color correction must be correct. Go to (top left) Image>Mode>RGB (this must be checked).

STEP 3: Go to Bucket Fill Tool (Shift+B), make sure your primary color is black, and leftclick on the background layer. Its black now. Go to the lower right side where the layers are located and rightclick>New Layer. A window pops up. This layer will be transparent, where it says "Fill With: [set to] Transparency". There is now an invisible checkerboard thing.

STEP 4: Set your primary color to white, use the "Paint Brush Tool" ("P" as the sticky key). Here are the settings I recommend:

Size: 8.0
Aspect Ratio: 0
Angle: 0 (degrees)
Spacing: 1.0
Hardness: 100.0
Force: 100.0

Rightclick, without stroking a dot, the far left side of the transpareny layer (at coordinates (0,512). Hold LeftShift, go across to the far right (1024,512) through the middle and rightclick again.

STEP 5: Rightclick on the transparent layer, then leftclick "Duplicate Layer". This is where the tedious parts begin. This part comes with flexibility; make it how you want it to be, but I will be specific. Go to the "Smuge Tool" ("S" as a sticky key). I recommend these settings:

Size: 60.0
Aspect Ratio: 0
Angle: 0 (degrees)
Spacing: 1.0
Hardness: 0.1
Force: 100.0

On the duplicated layer, you need to stroke the smuge up along the line.

STEP 6 (optional): To reduce the repetition the texture may have in the end, you can repeat the smudging step on a duplicated layer of the straight line, downwards.

STEP 7: With horizontal repetition, duplicate the layer you just smudged. Go to Layer>Transform>Flip Vertically and then Flip Horizontally. If the layer is not touching the line, go to Layer>Transform>Offset (Shift+Ctrl+O) and set the "Y:" to a negative number to move it up.

STEP 8: Go to where the layers are located, rightclick on the top-most (or the newest one that does not include the straight line and background) layer, and leftclick "Merge Down". Then duplicate the unified layer. Go to Filters>Blur>Gaussian Blur. I recommend these settings, but it is up to you:

Size X: 10.00
Size Y: 10.00

Merge this layer with the default smudged layer. Duplicate the layer again, go to Layer>Transform>Flip Horizontally. Then merge the layers. The texture is able to loop horizontally.

STEP 9: Now for the magic to happen. Select "Layer2 copy" and go to Filters>Blur>Linear Motion Blur.
In this window, set these to the following:

Length: 55.00 (or 30.00 < X < 75.00)
Angle: 90.00 (this will always be 90 degrees)

Now for PART 2 of the tutorial; perfecting realism to your colorless template.
