(you wouldn't believe how many people on stackoverflow are going to be given the harshest torture when they die)
then u click add clip to track. after that right click and select material overlay effect after that right click on the small clip in the effect bar you just added and select "show in element viewer" there u open effects and go to children and select new clip there will be a small bar that says material and three dots. click the three dots then u can select a material to use for the overlay. u can exend the period of the overlay by dragging the effect clip out. Hope this helps someone!
