Keep an eye out for anyone peculiar.
The first property you can use crayons for if ya can't find it naturally, the second shouldn't be too hard to figure out depending on what body part they're flailing about
Spoilers: They want either gloves, boots or an armlet of any colour used for the text describing it
Hint 1: It's a secret, not a quest.
Hint 2: Barathrumites sell secrets about tech (like the xyloschemer), water ritual Otho, Barathrum, or Argyve and trade rep for secrets. Alternatively, get infected with mumblemouth.
Hint 3: You're looking for a secret revealing the location of a peculiar snapjaw, there'll be a marker on your map at this point.
Also why make getting the main thing needed to interact with your mod so obtuse? I cant know when someone is selling it without rolling the dice on a weird artifact, and there's no chance I'd know about a specific snapjaw holding it without checking this thread in the first place. It's not a huge deal I just fail to understand why you're so secretive of it, even with the option to start with one (Which btw, didnt know was a thing until after I started a save and I dont want to start over for it)
I installed the mod around the time I did Golgotha. Now, I had a bunch of areas already discovered, so it could be that one of the random areas that I had already checked was where I supposed to go, but I've exhausted all barathrumite secrets and all of them have been random ruins and haven't come across the xyloschemer. Checked all villages I knew of, sweeped the initial area for any new ones, checked every vendor I have access to almost daily, dromads, tinkerers. schematic drafters, Argyve, bought every artifact that I couldn't identify, I know the mod's working because I've found the Tinker's Token and a couple of schematic chips. Now I'm well past Omonporch, and I really feel like something must be wrong for me to not have seen a single one.
Listen, man, maybe I'm super unlucky, but could it maybe be possible to just place a hook on a settlement or something? I would really like to build a home to dump my gear and water on, I'm tired of working off a 3 chest hobo camp in joppa, and this is killing my motivation to continue the game.
Nevermind, I guess I'll roll a new character, I don't want to resort to wishes, but damn man, this is kinda frustrating for someone who just wants to play your mod.
Right, so, based on what I've gathered from the official Discord, and by giving the mod files a go, here's my conclusions:
HEAVY SPOILERS REGARDING THE MOD'S FUNCTIONALITY AHEAD. I'll try to reveal them from less directly to more, but the short version is, the mod works, but you might not encounter a xyloschemer for a good chunk of the game. If you need more of a nudge in the right direction I'd advise checking Armithaig's comments above. If not, here goes:
1) The guaranteed Xyloschemer is an "oddity", "tech", "snapjaw" type rumor. It's classed as an "oddity" in the journal, so it will be easy to tell if you get it from a secret. Unfortunately, this also means that you can basically exhaust every single water-binding secret with relevant factions and still miss it completely. (I guess trash divination will eventually give it to you).
AFAIK this is due to the game using a different generation method than back when the mod was last updated in 2021, but I can't confirm.
2) Furthermore, said guaranteed XS can be spawned pretty much anywhere on the map (though it will favor the intial areas). Meaning, you could literally sweep the entire map several times over before you finally find it.
it can also drop as village quest reward
3) It seems you can also get a Xyloschemer as Relic drops, however, if you're installing this on a game in progress, it obviously can also be a massive pain in the ass to find. To note, this also appears to be RNG dependant, so it's also possible to completely miss it.
I can propose five solutions if you're stuck like me.
- A blueprint seems to be purchaseable from Argyve, however, I could not find any specific lines adding it on the code when I checked it, and I did not get it a single time when I dropped it into a game in progress. It might just spawn on a new game only, or I might have been incredibly unlucky.
- I suppose you could beguile/love injector snapjaw elites and water-bind them for the secret.. Good luck turning that rep around, but you could do it.
- If you want to just nudge the intended path and get the location of the guaranteed XS on your Journal, you can Wish 'revealsecret:$hpsnapgrifter'. Getting there and completing the encounter is up to you.
- I have made a small mod that you can install alongside Hearthpyre and adds a guaranteed Xyloschemer at a point where I find reasonable.
- If you want to have a xyloschemer NOW, you can Wish 'HearthpyreXyloschemer'. This will spawn one on the floor right there, right then.
