There is a fine line between fantasy mechanical gizmos and modern futuristic technology cartoonish/spinoff design.

Please consider Warcraft III's dwarfs, gnomes and goblins, Tolkien's dwarfs, Game of Throne's lore, the Witcher 2, Guild War 2's mechanical Asuras race. Observe the fantasy look with modern accents.

Now please consider Warhammer 40k lore and design guidelines, and finally Final Fantasy 13. Observe the modern look with fantasy accents.

Lastly observe the Mass Effect games, Deus Ex artstyle, Halo, Tribes:Ascend. These are games with modern futuristic artstyle.

Dota 2's lore and artsyle only allows the first style in order to keep consistency. One of Dota 2's main advantage is the design consistency over League of Legend's rather mixed art direction.

The set looks cool, but it's too much for this and I fear for Dota 2's future item design if this will pass valve's filters, but I still have hope that someone at valve will be ballsy enough and... deny (heheh) the crowd's rythmic chants for this theoretically sound, but ultimately (heh( broken item.
