Dawn of Man

Realistic Stone Age

Sticks and stones can't break my bones... cuz there ain't no sticks no where!
I thought maybe I got a bad map generation, but I tried different ones, and really only the "Mountain Valley" one approached anything even remotely to a reasonable amount of sticks available on the map.

I understand the idea behind the mod is to make the game harder, but I'm just not sure that limiting the amount of sticks to such an extreme is the best design to get to that point.

Frankly, it's stupid. For such an interesting mod that makes many more things in line with reality, has for some reason made THE MOST COMMON material face of the planet, the least common in their mod.
I'm pretty sure that all 3 of the maps I checked had more cherry trees alone than stick. My sister owns an orchard. Has about 500 trees. Know what else she has? A painfully large abundance of STICKS. SO MANY STICKS!! So many in fact, the only way to dispose of them so that they don't take over the property in massive piles is to burn them.

I was immensely amused at a Nile Delta simulation that completely forgot the role of reeds as brush wood.

First clothing was hammered reed. Their ships were made of reeds since those were boats of woven reed bundles. Their walls were strengthened with reed. Reed became, literally, the symbols of the stone pillars that upholds Egyptian temples even to this day. And is still referenced in modern architecture of the immediate Middle East.

Reeds gave us the first persistent paper. When experience became civilization.

I can't fault the mod author - this is probably a development design assumption. To be fair the base game seems to ignore the 90% of early human development happening outside the North of Asia or Greater Europe.

I hope that can be corrected.

Hi guys, it seems I missed this discussion. Thanks for all your feedback. I agree with you that there should be 2-4 times more sticks on the maps, and would have done that if possible. Unfortunately, the current limitations of the base-game does not allow that for this mod maps (if I increase sticks "density", it will add more sticks in circles pattern, that look very unrealistic). Other maps have small piles of sticks because they have very small land forms; using same code will just generate 2-3 huge piles of sticks (again, unrealistic). I did request to the devs to add a "real density" option that would allow adding more random sticks, but they said it is not so important (maybe you can write to them at bugs@madrugaworks.com and let them know it is for us).

I figured it was a platform limitation. Thanks for staying on it. It helps them.

I will try to use mostly bones for my weapons then. I must preserve all sticks for buildings ;D

There is no need to rationalize sticks. Just learn to chop trees and you will have almost unlimited supply of sticks and trunks ;) (depending on map)

First - I am thoroughly enjoying your mod, I was looking for a map with nice flat land & your wooded hills works nicely. That said I appreciate it might look unrealistic, but can you tell me how to edit your mod to increase stick density? I just had 3 boys killed by wolves in one year as they went across the river to get sticks!

You can open Environments/environment_realistic_hills.xml and search for "DetailStick" and change density value. If you increase it a bit, more stick will appear distributed in "thin" circles. If you increase it more, sticks will appear distributed in thicker (and thicker) circles up to value=1 where sticks will be everywhere. You can try to limit them by altitude and angle (like in vanilla maps), but will result in very few large zones with sticks in only parts of the forests.
