Psionics Ex Machina : Lore
When Tygan started his investigation into Psionics, he encountered many roadblocks. The simple truth was there was barely any research into the subject, as Advent didn’t publish any of its own and rogue scientists weren’t able to publicise theirs into the wider scientific community. With only one potential source, Tygan contacted the Templars and implored them to aid his research. While they didn’t actually know a great deal on the subject, one thing they mentioned was a lead. They informed him that their Shard Gauntlets acted as a conduit for them to channel their powers through.

Combined with an inspection of the Priest Psi Amps, Tygan was able to reverse engineer them and produce schematics for XCOM. However the base Psi Amp proved lacking, even in the hands of the well trained psions within the Templars. He had reached a dead end, or so he thought.

One of the other members of the science team was doing some of his own research into gemstones (private research is heavily discouraged amongst Advent, so scientists in XCOM are allowed plenty of their own) next to where an updated psi amp was being tested. The gemstones reacted violently, rattling in their container and being almost drawn towards the psi amp. Witnessing this, Tygan realised that the gemstones were the perfect conduit for psionic energy.

Employing them in the psi amp had just that effect, but only the Templars were able to fully utilise them as they had already mastered manipulating psionic energy. This is where the idea of the PCS’ came from. If they could be used to boost soldier’s perception or focus, could they perhaps boost someone’s aptitude for psionics? After further research Tygan could expect this outcome, and it was intriguing.
