The Helper's Hardhat

Class recognition?
I feel like this hat in particular paired with the cute suit (possibly skin colored) could cause some difficulty in class recognition at a glance or from above. While definitely well made, I don't know if this is such a good idea. TF2's classes are supposed to have a defined outline to easily recognize the classes. If they gave a class an item that makes it look similar to another class, it could ruin balance. Not necessarily that big of an issue but it may prevent Valve from adding this to the game.

I disagree. Most engineers I come across don't wear the stock hat, and it's pretty easy to define between a pyro and an engineer regardless of what hat or cosmetics they're wearing.

A core mechanic of TF2 is the easy to spot classes. Listen to some of the early developer commentaries and they'll talk about how they designed them with specific features. Like I said, at a glance, this will probably look like an engineer. Class recognition is important for assessing a situation quickly.

Again, I disagree with you. The number one thing I look for when identifying a class is the shape of their body. ESPECIALLY if they're turned around, the Pyro has a fuel-canister on his back which is a dead giveaway... Not to mention that most of his head is a very-defining gasmask. You'd have to be very new to the game to not be able to tell the difference between an engineer wearing one of many cosmetics and a pyro wearing a tilted engineer's hat.

The original dev team put great effort to make sure class recognition was very simple. it's not about what veteran players can see, it's about being as accessible as possible with the simplest identification. once again, at a glance, a new player could be confused. the devs always make sure class recognition is simple and easy. it's how TF2 is meant to be designed at it's core. Mixing and matching classes like a dress-up game is essentially spitting on the foundation they built, and only adds more confusion for new players.

Yeah and you know what? They did SUCH a good job that you can have characters wear bird-heads, sweatshirts, pumpkin head, crowns, eyeball head, octupus head, executioner mask, visors, full-helms, bandanas, suits, paper bags, etc WHILE being able to tell at a glance which class is which. Having an engi's hat on a Pyro would not make a difference whatsoever when it comes to that lineup. Have you ever heard of ALL these wacky cosmetics EVER hurting the playerbase or there ability to tell which class is which? I certainly haven't. This hat that doesn't even make up half of the pyro's head wouldn't make any difference. It's pretty clear based on the whole gasmask, body, animation and weapons it's a pyro. You know what? I take back what I said. You could easily tell this isn't an engineer even if you're very new. The only way you couldn't tell was if you were blind.

I would argue that those hats can ruin the silouhettes as well. There are plenty of people that talk about how TF2's design has gotten worse over time. It's bad enough having those, adding items from other classes is just terrible.

who cares just add it so i can be a pybro

Dude, the silhouette of a pyro wouldn't break if he wears a hard hat. Don't forget about this one being multiclass since, like, ever.

You mean the hats that were already added can ruin the silouhetttes?
Is this a joke?
use the aperture hardhat, lol

There wouldn't be an issue. Pyro's body proves that.

In my opinion, Pyro's posture and general body-shape differ too much from Engineer's to make it a real issue.
