Quest part stopped working
I've been messing with this for a while trying to figure it out, will update with what's going on in case anyone can help. It's long, so I thought to make it a discussion rather than a comment.

BaB was unsubscribed in the data files even though the updater said it was subscribed and fine. After half a dozen tries at various combinations of unsubscribing, subscribing, activating, manually installing, deleting, adding, and ticking the box over and over again, it finally seems to agree that I'm subscribed to the mod. I wish I could be more specific about what did the trick and if it's telling the truth, but I really just kept poking at it.

The menu registers in the MCM again, the songbooks are there, the instruments are there, and I can play music. The animation and audience applause works as normal, as near as I can tell.

The actual quest doesn't work. The dialogue has returned, but the quest objectives haven't. So I can go up to corpulus in the Winking Skeever and say I want to perform, he says 'Of course,' but the objective to perform at the inn never appears. If I return to him, it gives the option (again) for 'I want to perform here' and the whole sequence can repeat itself, but I can't ever get to the point where the quest completes.

The console shows the quest as 'Running' and at stage 0 when I do sqv _LP_BardTavernQuest. Resetting just kills the whole thing (sets it to 'stopped' with apparently no way to restart it) so that the dialogue options no longer even show up. Trying to set to a new stage also just makes the dialogue disappear, but I was just trying whatever I could think of by then.

I don't have any outstanding performances I've forgotten to get paid for. Trying to go to Viarmo and decline a quest he gave me a while ago also just has nothing happening. I'm afraid I don't know enough about how the game or the mods work to know what's going on here other than a vague 'thing wrong with making quest happen'.

It's late where I live so I'm going to call it a night, but if anyone has advice or solutions I'd be incredibly grateful. Fingers crossed.

Thanks!

I just saw the part where you said the menu registers in the MCM again. I can see now you are upgrading from an old version. The latest upgrade does not re-register the MCM. When upgrading from a very old version, it will take time to re-register the MCM, just as if the mod were newly installed.

If you had saved in the middle of a performance before updating, that quest may have cleared and all objectives completed in order to clean things up with the upgrade. It depends on wgich version you are upgrading from. The performance quests are spawned by the Story Manager (location change event) when you enter a tavern or jarl's house. That's why you can't restart them via console. Just exit the building and re-enter to respawn the updated quest. If you had a spy quest from Viarmo, just go back to him and get another. The reset of the quests was necessary due to changes with one of the upgrades.

Hi, thanks for the answer! The menu in MCM had vanished; I honestly have no idea why. That's part of what the first problem was, when the dialogue was there but nothing actually worked. Now it shows up and the instruments and songbooks work, it's just the quests that don't.

Unfortunately, I can't get new performances quests or the ones from Viarmo, and that's what I'm not sure of the reason for. I can go to the innkeeper and say 'I'd like to perform here,' and the innkeeper says 'of course' but then literally nothing happens. I can play, but there's no quest to complete and get paid, and then if I go up to him again the 'I'd like to perform here' option is there again instead of 'I'm done for now.'

The spy quest from Viarmo was one I couldn't complete (possibly you can't do it with jarls who are put in by the civil war storyline?)--I went to Dawnstar to talk to Brina but there was no 'I'd like to play for you' option. That was ages ago, so I don't think it's related; I've done a lot of tavern quests since. Anyway I went to Viarmo to tell him I'd changed my mind about it and get another one, and again, nothing happens. The dialogue option is there, and I can click on it, but it doesn't actually do anything.

All this remains the case even if I leave the cell and come back.

Going to have a go later today at trying more stuff, but again, grateful for any suggestions from people who know more about modding than me. Which is basically everybody, honestly, I mostly just play. ;)

Are you using the bsa file? it almost sounds like all the dialogue fragments are missing for you.

Also, which version are you upgrading from? Is it a version from before it was on the workshop? Thanks.

I think so? LPBards.bsa and LPBards.esp are both in the relevant Data folder, and Steam says 'yes' to being subscribed now, so I assume that all means I'm using it.

I'm upgrading from whichever the last one here on the workshop was; I've only ever been subscribed to it here (except very briefly the other day when I tried a manual install in case it was the workshop that wasn't working). This all only started the first time I loaded up with the latest update.

Thanks for keeping trying to help. :)

@lk, do your last comments mean the MCM is not working for you? because the workshop mod is not different. The MCM framework can take up to 1 minute to register new menus or updates of menus, though. If it updated more frequently, it would be a real drag on performance.

I'm working on 5.0, so if all else fails, you and cathleg should try that version. Each new update includes an update routine that runs to clean out some things in the background, including refreshing the MCM menu.

I still have no idea what's going on, but it is now working on all characters EXCEPT the one I was playing when it all went wrong. I think I might have stupidly deleted some saves, otherwise I'll go back to an earlier one--but if not, that's the character the furthest way through the game who has plenty of gold to pay for her own inn rooms. Since the music part itsef still works so I can keep the immersion, it should be a thing I can live with unti 5.0! Thanks again for all the help; if I ever figure out what's up I'll pass it on.

eta: And I see 5.0 is there--been away from Skyrim for a few days. Fingers crossed! :)

I don't really think this is caused by the mod itself. I suspect it's an issue with that save.

Yeah, I agree. No idea what happened, but since it worked on all the other saves in the end, I just went back to an earlier one with the character. Thanks for all the help, anyway. :)
