To defend your settlements you need to upgrade them and gain military power, if you have one with a lot, there's a chance that they can be re-used. You can also send militia to attack other factions settlements or defend other colonies under attack.
my highest military is like a 2 then it gets warred back a level every single time

I usually get all the perks that give me cheaper settlement cost and wait until I have around 4000 silver and the "people want to have more settlements NOW!!" event and build 3 - 4 settlements, in 1 i build everything that upgrades military and the others are usually miners (it's which gives the most money IMO), that way if a settlement needs help 1 has military and I just keep going like that until they are all lvl5, and then build 2 more settlements, once those 2 get lvl 5, 2 more settlements and I go on like that until I have -35 FPS and create a new world.

i have been having the same problem, i am at the point where i just want to give up on the mod, i could barely start my first settlement with a vain of silver on the map, and now it is under constant attack and i can't afford to upgrade it let alone defend it, and it already is going into the red, it has caused nothing but frustration, in the time it took to wright this comment i have decided to just stop using the mod, it is a good idea but as is just isn't well balanced enough to work.

Try using prisoner ransom, allows to either return prisoners to a faction in exchange of prisoner value (you can multiply it in options) or fail, get a raid, get more prisoners and try again.

Also, in empire, you can modify how much money you make and lose in options, so just tweak that to your liking.

Are people still having problems with this? I have not had any issues with raids at all. I had one raid against me that I failed, but every raid after that has been defeated successfully and I have even had overwhelming victories on several occasions, which allow me to use my armies again without waiting for a cooldown. Did they patch the issue out, or has nothing changed since the original post? If people are still having problems, I might be able to offer some advice

I've been having the issue as well. Started a new settlement and upgraded it, as well as put in fortifications, and had the One people United policy. So right off the bat 3 Military Strength. Not too long after, get attacked by a 5 strength army and knocks my settlement down a level. Continues happening with over 75% of the attacks being 5-8 strength, and I've been barely keeping happiness above 0, and prosperity hasn't gone up past 50% in a while. Settlement is now strength 6 and still got clapped by a strength 8 half an hour ago. Should mention that this is a tribal start in extreme desert, strive and survive, 1 and a half years in and have barely had any wealth throughout most of this playthrough.

Quick edit: I like the idea and the fact you have to defend settlements, adds some risk and reward. However as it is now is a bit ridiculous.

I think I understand why people are having issues. I have only had a few attacks of higher level than my settlements, and I was able to fend them off.

I am not 100% certain on this, but I think if you deploy an army from one settlement to defend another, I think maybe both the army being deployed and the army already there defend together? I am not totally sure, but I have had overwhelming victories against equally sized raids doing this. I had a settlement with army size 4 being attacked by army size 6, so I deployed an army from another settlement that was also size 6 hoping that would be enough and I got an overwhelming victory, which is odd considering the armies were of equal size. If the size 4 and size 6 were working together, that would explain why that happened. I have been able to reproduce these results, but only a couple times so idk if it's just coincidence or something.

I certainly agree though that you should not be facing invasion sizes that are vastly greater than you have the capacity to defend. If deploying an army does actually combine the settlement's original defending army and the deployed army, then perhaps it would make sense for you to get level 5 armies attacking military level 3 settlements (though it would be nice if that was stated in the tutorial or something). If that's not actually how it works, then yeah this is broken and needs to be adjusted.

That'd be useful if it's an actual thing. I'll try it when I do get another colony set up, but of the times I've tried to deploy the military from my previously stated single settlement, two of the three times they showed up on my map when clicking on a tile in the world map. Granted, I could have been using the completely wrong button for the job, but like you said, it would be nice if it was stated in the tutorial and/or help video that comes with the mod. If having other settlements assist each other is an intentional feature, and something you're supposed to do, I'm all for it. If it's not an intended feature (at the moment) then something should be done to balance/fix overwhelmingly strong forces attacking baby colonies.

Don't deploy military using the "deploy" button. That only deploys them to your local area. When a base is under attack, click on the base on the world map and select the option to deploy an army. That option only appears if the base is under attack.

Edit: forgot to mention that I have to agree with you about the lack of tutorial.

Ah, that would explain a lot then. If that's an option, it's likely meant to be that way, and somewhat explains the large difference in defending and attacking army strength, though it's still a bit overboard, unless you have quite a few settlements. A bit more of a tutorial or dedicated spot on the mod page or discussion board for things like this would be useful. Hopefully this helps some others who are looking for this kind of thing.

It just makes me feel hopeless when they attack my settlements. I don't know how the mechanism works and the military level is not enough to defend
Dex 29 Nov, 2020 @ 8:47am
So if you only have 1 settlement is there any way to defend it better with forces/squads or are squads only to help your own settlement? I got attacked 4 times in a row with a military strength of 6, lost 3 upgrades and 7 buildings, down to +30 from +100. On the last attack I also had 6 military and I would have assumed having "home advantage" or so will lead to me winning, but no, that was actually the worst fight of all costing me all buildings+level.

Hi.
Im having a bit different issue with deffending a settlement. It's like im deploying a squad, killing most of attackers so th rest of them is running away, and when they leave map im getting kicked to world map and "Deffence failed" message appers. It's the same when i just send some pawns manually from another colony. What im doing wrong ?

Edit: Killing attackers with dev mode results the same way :/

Edit: ok, it seems to work now, when attack message appeared i didn't do anything and my squad automatically deffended the settlement :)
