[Solved] What to do when you have Helms Deep Reborn by SS?
Answer: below

Hi,

Today I have spent almost all day researching the controversy behind this (in)famous map. I have looked over countless posts and read long walls of text, looked over lots of minutes of video footage and it was all so much that I had to take a break and wasted my whole day on this. Now I returned from that break and honestly I dont know what to do now.

I still have subscribed to SS's map, the one that is set to friends-only apparantly. What do I need to do to erase all traces and changes made by this scoundrel? I know it is not enough to uninstall workshop mods from steam by unsubscribing because of their unbelivably amateuristic and ♥♥♥♥♥♥ method of installing/uninstalling mods. I know you have to also go in the folder where the mod resides and delete that as well. However, I want confirmation on this step, is it the ONLY thing that needs to be done or are there more things to keep in mind? What about register keys, do I have to fiddle with that? If yes, which? Etc.

Please post a step by step guide for people like me, who want to make the transition from SS's map to this "fixed" map. Try to make it as complete as possible keeping in mind what I mentioned in above pararaph. Also readable and understandable for the less tech savvy users IF POSSIBLE. Thank you very much in advance.

It should be enough to just unsubscribe from S_S's version, but if you want to be extra sure that there's no residue files left over, you can verify your game files as well afterwards to be 100% certain your files are untouched.

Due to the nature of all the stuff in S_S's version, it's not like a virus that infests other parts of your PC; it's got a limited scope providing you're not a server host, and unsubscribing should generally suffice. When you re-launch the game, the VPK of the mod will not be in your game files anymore, and the only thing that could still remain, would be altered default files, which will be changed back to normal with a quick game cache verification.

To verify you game files, go to your steam library, right click on Left 4 Dead 2, and select properties. There, go to the "local files" tab, and click on "verify game cache" (or "verify game files"). This can take anywhere from 5 minutes to an hour, but essentially what it does is go through every file to check whether something has been altered or is missing, and then fixes any files that have such problems.

I see, okay so your advice is to unsubscribe from the mod, relaunch game, check wether the .vpk has been deleted, verify game cache, done?

Also, when I verify game cache would it affect my other mods too? What I want to know is if verification will affect anything else negatively, especially regarding the installation of oher mods. Ty in advance.

Verifying the game cache only checks the default files, so any files that are missing or have been altered will be reverted back to normal. Unless any other add-ons are changing default game files, it won't affect them.

Dont forget to delete config.cfg in cfg folder.

It would reset all game settings into defaults but also removes any tampering that the map might have done to them.

Hmmm Im not sure if something that bad could be changed from it? I wouldnt like all my setings to return to default tho... It would suck. How bad can it be to leave it?

Probably no major risk in leaving it.

To piggyback off of this thread, I want to add that I also just found out about this controversy recently. I'm friends with SS on Steam (although I really should remove him) and I was able to find and unsubscribe from his version of Helms Deep on my computer. What about my friends who don't have him as a friend? Will the mod automatically uninstall itself when SS made his Helms Deep friends only? Or will they still have to go and manually unsubscribe from it?

Manually, its what I had to do. They can find it under workshop > subscribed items, search a bit and you will find that list. From there you can see his mod and click the unsubscribe button, however you cannot enter the mod page any more, you have to directly click the button on this list. As far as I know there is no other way... I guess you could fiddle with the actual mod files in the steam folder but... Dont risk breaking anything I'd say.

u can still unsubscribe normally through your Workshop subscribed items; for me, at least, it still appears on my subscribed items.
