Status Update
Hey everyone!

This post is a status update on the mod and about what has been happening in the last 2 years.

What?

Throughout the years, Russia Reworked has been maintained and updated by a small team of only two people (pretty much), along with a few GFX artists who have greatly helped with making the mod stand out.

As many of you may have noticed, the mod barely gets any updates today. This is due to multiple factors, and we think we owe you an explanation.

Modding HOI4 is boring and exhausting.

While it's not necessarily "hard" to mod HOI4, it becomes extremely boring and tedious. Paradox wanted to make the game easy to mod for anyone, and while they did succeed in that by introducing a fairly easy-to-use language of their own, it just makes it 100 times harder for big mods to develop things.

What becomes incredibly hard as well is maintaining the mod, as no real language support is available for the "HOI4 coding language" (or should I say "Paradox coding language"?). This is a pain to us, as we would have had much more fun (and an easier time) developing and maintaining the mod with a "real" language, like LUA.

With that, add the fact that the two maintainers of this mod do not play HOI4 anymore (or only on rare occasions), and that's how you create a "zombie" mod.

We are busy with other things.

This is something you often hear from mod developers and it's sadly true. We simply lack time, and the free time we get, we want to spend it somewhere else than developing and maintaining the mod (it really is exhausting). We also have many projects to work on (e.g. for school or work), which require us to use our free time as well.

We lack maintainers.

With enough time, you can develop pretty much anything, even alone. But sadly, this case alone is rarely a reality.

We always made sure to make our code optimised and spent many hours testing it. We also spent many hours fixing bugs and making sure the content we delivered lived up to the name. We even tried to make this mod as compatible as possible with other mods. But it's simply too much work for just two people, especially when combined with the previous statements.

HOI4 modding is limited.

As said previously, modding HOI4 is easy, and while you can make great things with the Paradox coding language, it's heavily limited and becomes a pain to maintain. Paradox sacrificed "scalability" for "ease-of-use". This allows many people to develop and release mods, even with no previous experience in development, but it totally limits "bigger" mods and developers.

Big overall mods are certainly impressive and enjoyable to play (big shoutout to all the devs out there), but they are certainly limited in what they can do and how well they run. HOI4 is already pretty poorly optimised, and even simple features can slow it down even more (and take weeks, if not months, to develop). It's not the developers' fault, as we simply cannot interact with the engine of the game, and are limited to this pseudo language.

As an example of this, we had so many ideas for the Second Russian Civil War, and while we did bring them to life, it wasn't without sacrifices. The implementation alone took months to code and added many bugs to the mod (which took us even more time to get rid of). Even when making sure to write clear and optimised code, we are left with very big files, which are very hard to maintain (and even understand sometimes). This is something that shouldn't happen when developing something so "big".

Final words

For a long time, we did not know if we would one day have the courage or time to update the mod again, but it became clear after 2 years that we did not. Hence this announcement. But since so many of you love this mod, and still play it, we don't really want it to die.

This is why we are open to proposals to maintain, bring new features and finish "unfinished" work in the mod. We are still okay with publishing updates and helping out in development or giving bits of advice, but we do not have what it takes to add new content anymore.

Even more frustrating, the National Obligations have been left with at most 25% work left to do (all the hard parts have already been done for a long time). The second Anarchist path is also done, we just never had time to test it (which is why it is still not available).

With all that said, we are sorry it took us so long to release this post, and we really hope you can all understand. We released an update to make the mod compatible with the new HOI4 update. Thank you all so much for the support and for playing the mod.
