UBOAT Expanded Flags
Hi all,

I am the author of the flags section of UBE, thanks to Link for taking me up as a contributor. In this thread I will give some information about the artistic choices made about flags, that is why certain flags have been selected and not others, etc. Feel free to ask any question or point to what you think may be an error.

The aim of this work was to be as accurate as possible regarding what flags (or, stricto sensu, ensigns) were flown on ships during WWII. However, some artistic licence has to be taken in order to make the game slightly more enjoyable.

I am going to cover the following topics:
  • Germany
  • Commonwealth Nations
  • Other colonies
  • (Free) France
  • Baltic countries
  • Yugoslavia
  • Choice of ensign for the icons

Please note that flags are not dynamically changed over time, for the moment.

Germany
We decided to maintain the base game flags for Germany as part of UBE. The topic can be controversial so please refrain from making comments about "censorship". I will release in the near future a stand-alone version of the UBE flags that will include the accurate German flags, but this will not be included as part of UBE.

Commonwealth Nations
Commonwealth flags are reproduced correctly: all the military ships fly the white ensign regardless of their nationality while merchants fly their own version of the red ensign. The port flag will also be the national flag that was flown on land, so for example South Africa has 3 different flags: white ensign for navy, South African red ensign for merchants, and the Oranje, Blanje, Blou at ports.

A few small colonies that didn't have a red ensign are using a blue ensign. The "Bangladesh" tag, a country that didn't exist during WWII, is represented by the Bengal Presidency.

Colonies
Colonies uses their own flag & ensigns if they existed. Otherwise they use the flag of their overlord. For example, Lybia uses the Italian flag.

France
France has the established habit of generally not allowing its colonial possessions to have a different flag than the national one. Currently the mod has several colonial flags that did exist (e.g. Morocco, Lebanon). All other French possessions will fly the plain French flag, though I am considering adding a few real flags that were not used as ensign but could be argued to be "plausible" and "immersive" enough. One such example would be Indochina.

Further, the FR tag is representing Free France, while there is a separate tag for the French State (better known as Vichy France). Historically both used the same flag, but Free France flew a variety of jacks with the Lorraine cross and sometimes a defaced ensign with the cross as their main flag. So I have opted to have the defaced tricolour as the main ensign for the Free French forces while Vichy will keep the plain tricolour.

Baltic countries
The three Baltic countries are using the ensigns from prior to their occupation by the Soviets in 1940. This is a choice made for more in-game diversity, even though not entirely realistic. If it becomes possible to change flags based on the date, the flags of the SSRs will be introduced too.

Yugoslavia
Yugoslavia uses the flag of the Kingdom instead of Socialist Yugoslavia since stricto sensu the King was only deposed in late 1945. Arguably ships that flew the Yugoslav flag during this period would be more likely to be connected to the royal government in exile than the partisans.

Icons
The icons on the map and in the visible target lists for groups and ships will always show the civil ensign (which sometimes is the same as the national flag) regardless of whether you are looking at a civilian or military ship.
