I didn't notice the war hadn't started during that first 1939 patrol, I caused a few international incidences.

I guess you just have to sail around and wave.

You can board vessels and search them .... gains experience points for the search crew

You leave port on Aug 27 and war starts on Sep 1, shortly after which you get a "weapons free" from German command. Use the first few days to get your bearings, sail to the location of your mission and patrol it, since you still get credit for being in the area. If you want, practice intercepts and approaches, etc.

Definitely reflect and marvel at how the ocean is teeming with British ships, and how screwed Germany would be if it ever got into a sea war with the Empire. Foreshadowing. :)

I'm really glad Link made it this way, as it led to a very cool and immersive early war experience first time I played. I was in the patrol area, not shooting at anything since it was peace time, but I was drilling finding ships. Intercepted a British merchant with a Royal Navy escort, approached them without being spotted, close enough to see every detail on deck through my periscope. Shortly after, hostilities start, and I still have their speed, bearing and last position noted, and I know that the merchant is not armed and the escort has no sonar. Easy two victories on day 1.
