Originally, St. Monika was commissioned as a private map on a public server. After the client’s constantly growing demands that were not in the original agreement, I quit after 7 months of unpaid work.

Without a contract, we relied on our word. I had been supportive of their spontaneous changes or new structures requests, but the demands grew and grew until I couldn’t stand this man ballooning new features not originally agreed upon. It’s also a tactic used to pay less for more content asked little by little. I’m actually glad for this amateurish agreement, because I can leave without legal obligation otherwise.

Even though my commission went under, I wanted to finish this map for the Garry’s Mod community. I’m very sick of working in the shadows because I’m not allowed to release my maps to the public. Maps should be free for everyone.

In the end, I regained total creative freedom over the map, and I can publish it free on the Workshop. If there is a lesson to this, it’s to have clear communication with a client with a written agreement to prevent this exploitation. That client and I will not be working together in the future.

I’m confident St. Monika is my best work, and I hope you all enjoy it as much as I did making it.
