Upgrading guns

I am not playing as a faction leader, I am a part of the British Empire however, and modern rifles have been researched, is there a way for me to get my soldiers to use those rather than muskets?

As far as I know you have to re recruit them. You could try going to an armory at a castle but I dont remember there being an option to rearm grunts, just artillery.
