Yes, beyond the scope of this mod's intent. That being said, I use Enhanced Storage, and I believe that it adds a sort button to many(most?) containers. It's not automatic, but it's pretty close ( I don't always want to autosort. )

Thank you for your suggestion. I do indeed play Terraria, I probably like it more than Starbound.
The reason for the approach most mod authors take in Starbound is because of the API exposed to us by Starbound. There are not obvious hooks to do what you are suggesting, and also Starbound isn't very well optimized when it comes to mods. So if it were possible, it might actually be very slow.
That being said, I agree with you that sometimes the Terraria way feels better, though it has its downsides also ( like having to be in close proximity to the deposit chests. ) Its always nice to have options tho.
I will look into this and see if it is possible.
