Wisteria the Herbalist

Wisteria's Backstory.
For those of you curious about what REALLY happened with little miss Wis, here's her tale.

----

Wisteria is from a small mountain village that is on the far outskirts of a large kingdom. It was a rich and prosperous kingdom that, outside of its city walls, did NOT share its wealth with its people. They were, for the most part, left to fend for themselves.

A sickness hit the outer areas of the kingdom that was wiping people out left and right. Whole villages were falling to it. The capital wouldn't share doctors or its medicine, so the villages had to rely on its own source of treatment; shamans, priests, and of course, herbalists.

Wisteria was an apprentice and was left alone when her mentor, the only true herbalist in her village, left a short while before the sickness hit her town. She was left to try to treat the people of her village on her own, with what little she had. It was pretty ineffective.

Then a man came through her town. He claimed to be a traveling herbalist from another far off village who was going from town to town to share a remedy. He offered Wisteria a certain blossom which, when combined with a normal healing salve, would free her townsfolk from their suffering.

Desperate for a cure and to help her friends and family, she does as instructed. The 'remedy' is actually highly toxic. It causes many of the townsfolk to suffer exponentially before they finally pass. Those who survived the sick chase her out of town.

Wisteria manages to flee the angry mob and bumps into the man again on a cliff edge. He changes form to our good old Maxwell (shock and awe!) and the last thing Wisteria sees is his smug face before she's swallowed up by shadows.

Most people are entirely aware of who Maxwell was, but if not, PLEASE do not provide any spoilers! Some, though behind, may prefer to learn things through experience.

As for the 1900's remark... She IS from the time period. Her particular locale is just SEVERELY underdeveloped, but let's just say there's more to this 'kingdom' than I've fully elaborated on. ;)

Despite the 'kingdom' title, it isn't at all renaissance, I can assure you. ♥

Unless you specifically lived within the capital, getting anything that could truly have you living in 'modern' times, at least for her particular country, was nigh impossible. And the only way to LIVE in the capital was really to be born in it. There was a specific ideal for perfection via their 'king' (Dictator-- Really, only the outlaying communities even relate the old terms like king and kingdom to their reality), and he would NOT allow anyone from outside city walls to even /enter/, with very few exception.

Outlaying towns like Wisteria's were pretty much left to fend for themselves. Because of this, they're denied the 'modern' amnesties that the capital city has. They rely on things like herbalism to get by, because it's literally all they know. Their dictator has actually managed to keep them several centuries behind because it keeps HIM safe from local uprising. He gives them false promises of hard work bringing entry to the city and an easy way of life. He has them idolizing the city, rather than scorning it.

Their dire and desperate way of life is ALSO what made Wisteria such an easy target.

There's more than what I've given you, I promise. :) Perhaps soon, I'll get a full collective explanation.

so are you saying she is from the the 1900s but her country were she live in is a diffrent then the orthers.

if no then i am going to put someting on this comment

if yes then i am still put something on this comment just in case you said no and i'm sorry if i spoiled ya

i am going to put some spoilers, but i put them in pinch black, and the only way to read them is to put your mouse on the pinch black thing, so if you don't want to get spoiled them do not put.. ya know what, you might know already not to put your mouse on the pinch black thing

don't starve character have to be in the time peroid between 1905 (when willam carter (maxwell) found the Codex Umbra) to 1986 (the year when the don't starve mod "the screecher" was left off) you get the picture now

Dude you don't even have to go with that story. Figure this: Maxwell is an all-powerful demon who can warp reality and mess with people's heads willy-nilly. I know its not 100% DS canon, but its not out of the realm of possibility that Maxwell can time travel.

I appreciate the reassurance! ♥ I agree completely. Maxwell has insane amounts of power, and I believe that he's fully capable of that sort of temporal shenaniganry.

My guess is that her "Kingdom" was Tsarist Russia, which did exist when Maxwell gains his powers. Old Russia still practiced serfdom back in the good ol' 1910's and almost all the country was left in a preindustrial state, unless you lived in city of corse. The sickness that effected the country side was influenza which hit all of Europe and most of the world during the late 1910's. The City or Moscow at this point would have been under the control of Lenin and his Reds, which still was repairing itself after the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk or how I would like to call it, the "Treaty of here is most of our land so please don't come over and shoot us in the face". Most of Russia in this point was in a pretty nasty civil war which further Screwed the lower class and only mounted up the grave count. Also the fact that Influenza also killed more people than WW1 itself would explain why all these villages were being destroyed.

This is some pretty cool backstory for the character. You wouldn't be opopsed to someone using it in their story, would you? I would make sure to assign credit where it is due; and should the answer be yes to Wisteria being used by other people, could you describe how she would interact with other characters in the DS world, if not, Wilson?

Forgive the very belated response! I'm absolutely okay with others using Wisteria, provided credit is given and links are provided, etc. :)

As for her interactions with other characters, I hope I can eventually get around to doing an in-depth explanation for that kind of thing. It would be a fun little experiment! I can say this: she'd be very fond of Wolfgang and she would admire both Wilson and Wickerbottom for their intelligence and expertise.
