Cannot upgrade Early Corvs to Corvs? etc

Have my first playthru and have a fleet of corvs/misc other stuff with "early" class ships. I got the next tier? i guess... it no longer says "early", so I figured i'd rebuild em into those, but i cant seem to do so via fleet editor or individually.

Is this by design, or am I simply a nub?

You cannot refit earlier vessels into later vessels...

You can continue to upgrade those early vessels with new technology, but you cannot physically convert them into the newer hulls...
