NPCs could balance out the shop and it's weapons, since there could be a ton of them (including the players themselves).
you do have a point about that the revive system would make the game too complicated, so maybe you shouldn't add that...
what if there were items or methods to break down things that the farmers build; like maybe every clown (including NPCs) would spawn with a hammer that destroys walls slowly, but it only has one use per life. the farmers could only place one wall per life too.
you're right that the lobby would take away time from actually playing the game. however, what if instead of that you would spawn in like normal, but if you are alone and waiting for actual players to join, NPCs would spawn instead to replace the missing players.
(P.S. NPCs could be weaker than actual farmers; whether it be that their A.I intentionally makes them dumb, or they deal less damage to farmers.)
