Can someone explain scopes to me?

I'm not a gun user so I'm confused as to which scopes are best for each rifle, e.g. if i want to get the longest range on an M24, do I use 4x32, x4-x12 or the x8?

X4-x12 should increase the distance the most. I need to test as someone said one of the updates had broken the distance multiplier for scopes.
