A historical curiosity. 3/5 stars.

This version of "Return of Dr. Cortex" isn't bad at all, but nowadays it's hard to ignore the feeling that it's just a worse version of its remake. There are a few things I prefer in the 2013 original, though. The start of the sewer section in Map 1 feels less messy and stressful than it does in the remake. It's shorter with less filler content, particularly in the finale — although it still feels a bit too long to comfortably finish in a single sitting. Most important of all, the joke about the Survivors being booted off Big Brother UK lands a lot better in the original.

Every other change in the 2020 remake is an improvement, though. The levels were reordered, expanded, and graphically enhanced. New boss fights were added. The addition of gems incentivized you to actually break all the crates, and bots couldn't grab items through unbroken crates anymore. I enjoyed my time with the original, but it mostly just made me want to play the remake instead.
