Operating procedures

This sub is designed for campaign use with the player functioning as captain. It's not griefer proofed, it's not 'meta'. This sub is how I imagined a XXI submarine would have been converted for operations on Europa. Most compartments are bare or part bare. It will require a large crew to keep maintained.

For maximum efficiency, reactors should be disabled by first selecting 'Rig for Silent Running' from the nav console, manually removing both fuel rods from both reactors and storing them and all other fuel rods in the top security cabinet next to reactor A. This will stop the AI from restarting the reactor as the top security cabinet is restricted to captain only. Rig for silent running forces reactors off and engages pure battery operation. Reactors will need to be manually restarted by either the captain or engineers when leaving silent running mode.

Batteries will recharge when the XXI is docked with silent running disabled. You may notice the massive power draw causing the whole station to be dark for about a minute if batteries are discharged. It's free power, but bare in mind if you stay in port too long, the station will use up all of its fuel rods and people will begin to suffocate. Theoretically, the XXI can operate free of fuel rods indefinitely as long as there are stations to dock at.

Battery charge rate for all main batteries is controlled by top battery in electrical room.
Batteries are automatically regulated based on current state of charge. This is to prevent massive surging issues when batteries are fully charged resulting in a fire. To override, simply switch automatic charging to rapid charging in the electrical room. 2/21/21 Surging issues have been corrected by new reactor automation. Fires can and will still occur on stations while docked if batteries are fully charged at max speed.

Battery output is controlled by the rear most small battery in the battery room. Default is 70%. 100% will provide up to 3000kw of output power. Battery discharge rate is directly related to the output slider. Setting the slider to the lowest amount necessary extends battery endurance at the expense of mobility. 12/27/20 Battery output is computer controlled via duty cycle modulation. Now capable of up to 6000kw automatically on demand with no battery waste. Charge rate on small batteries in battery room will cycle between 0 and 100% rapidly. This is intended operation.

The shuttle should be parked on either the fore or aft hatch for recharging. Recharging will only occur while reactors are running or when the main sub is docked with the shuttle main power OFF. Shuttle recharging is controlled by a toggle in the reactor room by the ladder.

The reactors are NOT idiot proofed. Use one rod and auto on each reactor. It should be plenty of power and safe! Reactors are infinitely more accurate and responsive as of 2/21/21 If batteries are extremely discharged, two rods per reactor may be necessary.

The XXI is designed and refitted around the idea of keeping the batteries and junction boxes dry. Leaks near the top of the sub will run through the battery and electrical rooms until the ballast pumps are overwhelmed. Then the duct blocks will seal off until its safe for them to open again. In severe flooding cases, use blow ballast from the navigation terminal to buy some time.

Mineral scanner is in conning tower. To use, you must open the sonar monitor on the backwall in the conning tower, enable the mineral scanner and turn on the sonar in the mineral scanner. The navigation terminal is for navigation only. 2/21/21 mineral scanner has been added near navigation terminal. In the current state of the game, the player will be piloting the sub 90% of the time.

To use H202 boost, enable the switch below the nav terminal. Disable for better fuel efficiency.

Weapon lamps and other accessories are controlled via switches from the command room. Leaving the lights off increases battery endurance and reduces the risk of being detected.

There are status monitors in the reactor and battery room. When flooding is detected in any non-ballast compartment, a small red light will flash. This is to assist human mechanics to track down leaks on such a large submarine.

The automatic hatches and pump in ballast room C can be disabled via a switch for fast cargo loading from wrecks.

Caution! Some munitions are military surplus and may be degraded and unstable.

Ballast tanks have power cutoffs in the command room. Use these to assist dealing with ballast flora. The console above it can command detonators in each ballast tank individually to detonate IC-4 in extreme circumstances.

Oxygen generator is set to maintain all main rooms at 80% air quality. This number can be adjusted by opening the terminal attached to the oxygen generator and simply typing the desired setting. 0 to disable oxygen generation entirely, 100 to run constant like any other sub.

If reactor output is upgraded at the shipyard, you must also update the max output data in the reactor regulators. To do this, open the terminal near the engine room and type in the estimated max power PER REACTOR. Default is 15000.

EMC Jewel operating procedures

When preparing to leave on an expedition, first enter through the bottom hatch, turn on the main power switch to the right. Undock at the Nav terminal. The bottom hatch and docking hatch on the XXI will close automatically.

Controlling the shuttle can be challenging at first as it's very agile. Recommend use 'maintain position' and click to where you want to go in tight spaces.

The two junction boxes in the pilots cockpit have switches. One for flood lights, the other for automatically aimed headlights. It is recommended to keep these turned off as much as possible to save battery power. The third switch to the right is labeled O², which controls power to the oxygen generator. Disabling it drastically increases battery life at the cost of having to wear a diving suit/mask while piloting.

When preparing to exit the shuttle for operations, simply enter the diving chamber with a dive suit equipped and press the hatch safety switch to unlock the hatches. The compartment doors should close automatically and the Jewel should maintain depth. Swim out and close the bottom hatch.

When returning to the U-2540, dock at the forward hatch for easy cargo unloading. For long storage, the Jewel should be parked at the rear hatch to minimize damage and maximize firepower.

If the Jewel is to be parked for a long time, the main power switch should be turned off. This enables charging.

Added mineral scanner for recent update. To use, you must open the sonar monitor on the backwall in the cockpit, enable the mineral scanner and turn on the sonar in the mineral scanner. The navigation terminal is for navigation only.

Added decoy launcher. Deploy decoys from the navigation terminal.

Crates can be stored externally on a rack behind the ballast tank.
