He canonically can write (as seen on the TF2 blog), so I guess he can read. And while you could say he's way stupider now (as he drank a lot of lead-poisoned water), Regular TF2 happens between 1968-1971, as in, presumably before he became an idiot.

It would be amusing to have the book upside down. It fits him well in relation to his Expiration Date doppelganger.

I'm pretty sure soldier can sort of read, but his helmet means he can't really see what he is looking at.
