4-man Crew Operation
1 Captain, 1 Gunner, 2 Maintenance:
If the Captain communicates to the gunner where the targets are coming from, strategically utilizes the EDC and maneuver the sub into optimal position for the weapons.
The Electrical repairs can be made easier if power to the "Other" grid is shut down completely as it only affects lights and fabricates which is non-essential. that way you wont risk electrical fires and the electrical repairs can be compartmentalized to battery room and reactor room. The engineer can help on lower gun as he is close to it. Maintenance on nav/status monitor can be done on request or by captain.
Mechanical repairs can be done on request by the captain that can see if the engines are smoking through his window, he can also see if his ballast pumps is not in sync (in other words one is damages and needs fixing) as well as the engineer calling when the reactor is damaged allowing the mechanic to do leak fixing. If the captain communicates fast and properly where the leaks are and the severity of them, the mechanic can plug said leaks before they get to bad and make sure they wont enter a room without proper gear.
while earning money from missions, salvage and sales you can focus your earnings on upgrades to ease up on maintenance.
It does not matter what jobs you have got in a situation like this, you need as a captain to temporary assign your crew to tasks even tho they might not have the optimum skills for the task.
Pushing this concept you can probably operate the sub with only 3 in the crew for a few missions
The Rorqual does not come out of the box in a perfect condition and can be upgrades by installing the proper logical components by the crew. Here is a list of a few recommendations.
- Install a button to toggle on/off the main engine from the helm. This is preferably also done to the Aux engine.
- Rewire the super capacitors so instead of having all 3 EDC connected to one and the same SC and each gun having their own SC make it so that each EDC have their own SC and wire each gun to draw power from all EDC. That way you get more power to use for your EDC and you get more power for the guns.
- Wire up the text displays in helm to show power information
- Install buttons to operate the cargo hatch next to them to allow crew to have control over them to ease loading of artifacts for deconstruction however this is not recommended if you are worried about greifers but perhaps when playing with trusted players more.
- Take advantage of the terminal in the helm and wire it up to respond to commands to operate systems you do not want buttons for.
- Use the aft/engine room bilge to install upgrades in to keep it looking nice and organized, you can use it as a lab for testing/debugging your circuits with the text panel and terminal there
Have a helmsman, it makes it easier and less redundant for you as a captain to sit on the helm all the time. This allows you to walk around and inspect the crew as well as help out where its needed while still commanding the ongoing operation via your headset.
Combine both Aux and Main engines for maximum thrust and turn off Main to make the sub go into power saving mode.
Early communication on where the enemy is coming from will allow gunners to best adjust to which gun they need to be on. It could be good that in the absence of dedicated security staff to have your crew prepared to which gun they should man based on target direction. Reactor Engineer can reach bottom gun, Medic can reach bottom and/or top gun. Assistants can be assigned as acting gunners.
The upper gun in more in the center of the sub and can cover decently aft and fore with the exception of the conning tower blocking line of sight. The lower gun is located under the middle ballast more in the front and therefor can not see that far to the aft unless you buy upgrades for visibility range for the weapons.
The EDC are strategically placed to cover you weapons blind spots and can be used to stun the creatures to then instantly maneuver the guns into arc.
Unless you rewire your supercapacitors you will not have much power for the EDC.
Filling the cargo hold airlock or even the cargo hold with water during transit can help you fight upward pushing currents but when passing through the current you might not be able to pump out water fast enough to prevent your sub from hitting the bottom.
Due to the size of the sub, Effective communication on where leaks are, is important by the helmsman/captain to aid the crews leakfixing speed.
Power Management
Reactor can/should be set to run automatic.
The reactor can run with one fuel rod even tho the system might say it requires more. It might say it needs more power but by running the system with the right settings batteries will compensate with extra power during high load and charge during low load so even if the reactor can not push out the amount of power it claims it needs the batteries will supplement it but the reactors gauges wont show it.
The power system have 4 modes of power supply:
Direct/Reactor - Power is fed directly from reactor to component only
Indirect - Power is fed from batteries while the reactor is on and supplying power to the batteries
Hybrid - Power is fed from both batteries and reactor the same time
Battery - Power is fed from batteries but the battery is either not set to charge or the reactor is offline.
Engines
The main engine can not be powered with battery as they provide insufficient output but the Aux engine can be run on batteries. Running engines on hybrid offer the engines a power buffer from the batteries while also allowing the sub to have engine power if reactor goes offline. Recharge rate can be set to 40-60%
Pumps
The pumps can be run on indirect or hybrid with the batteries set to 40% recharge rate. Thus allowing the sub to have power incase of the reactor being shut down.
Nav
The power requirement of the Nav systems does not exceed the battery output and therefor can always be set to run on indirect power. Running it with Hybrid or direct can cause power fluctuations and cause the monitors to blackout. Recharge rate on the battery can be set to around 20%
O2
should be run on Direct power and batteries can only be used in prolonged power outages or after upgrading both Oxygen generators power consumption as well as batteries recharge rate. Only after that the O2 can be run on indirect power. Due to that in its stock state, it can not run indirect therefor the batteries can be set to 10% for passive/slow recharge
Other
This contains only non-essential components such as lights and fabricators and can technically be shut off completely to ease up on maintenance and power demand. This system can no run on indirect unless batteries recharge rate is increased as well as perhaps installing a few light switches to selectively shut off lights to conserve electricity. Due to that in its stock state, it can not run indirect therefor the batteries can be set to 10% for passive/slow recharge
Maintenance
Electrical maintenance can be significantly reduced if all power to the "other" power grid is shut off. This will reduce electrical repairs to only, reactor room and its remaining 5 junction boxes (instead of 14) the battery room and helm which is all located next to each other.
Troubleshooting where there is a broken junction box in the other power grid can be done by following the junction boxes label system.
The first number = The distance from the reactor room in counts of junctions
The letter = is a sub-branch coming off the main "Other" line
O = Other
The "Other" junction boxes are located closely to where their components are located.
Wire color legend:
Red = Main power distribution line
Orange = Component distribution line
Black = Lights power supply
Blue = Binary (1 or 0) signal line
Green = Data signal line
Fabrication
Its a cargo sub, you will have a lot of storage space both in cargo shelfs for crates but also in other areas too.
There is tons of material scattered around the sub, some hidden and some easier to find.
Cargo bay A is the most water protected one if doors are kept closed.
Maintenance
Main areas are Reactor Room, Engine Room and Ballast Tank. Engineers can call when reactor is damaged, Helm personnel can see through the glass into the engine room if broken and can also see on the status monitor if the pumps are not in sync
Loaders, Bilge & airlock pumps as well as fabricators will require less repairs and is more dependent on how much they are used.
Leakfixing
If the helm staff is communicating where the leaks are based on what they can get from the status monitor, the search for leaks will be easier.
