The Crystal Turret was first discovered on the same expedition that the Cyberdemon remains were found. At first they were thought to be some kind of crystal formation that could conduct hell energy, but then they were brought back to the UAC Hell Research Facility they turned out to be much more when the scientists studying the crystals heard a heartbeat. They were then evaporated by the demon's signature attack: a focused beam of concentrated hell energy. The same scientist that came up with the cyberdemon idea decided that these creatures would make for a good defense system and placed four of them to act as sentry turrets in the Cyberdemon containment area. The other four were modified and placed at the top of the Hell Energy Tower due to the crystal's conductive abilities.
