Bug Reports and Common Issues
Last updated 05 Mar 2021
Seen something that shouldn't be there? Had your game crash for no apparent reason? Here's the thread for you.

Post your report with detailed information (screenshots, save games and error logs are always helpful) and I should respond to it.

If you're running any other mods with the game, including addons that require VNN, please try disabling those and playing without them. Your issue could be caused by mods conflicting with each other.
If you are using any addons for VNN, please state them in your report.

March 2021 Update: A Paradox launcher update has apparently caused a new bug which happens when you try to unsubscribe and re-subscribe to a mod while the launcher is open. This can cause the .mod file for the mod to disappear so you will launch vanilla every time; the launcher will be unable to install another .mod file, so you are unable to download the mod properly.
If this happens to you and you are unable to obtain a .mod file (it should be located in Documents/Paradox Interactive/Europa Universalis IV/mod), take the following steps to resolve it:
1) You will need to back up some files by moving them to a new folder in another location. They are all located in the Documents/Paradox Interactive/Europa Universalis IV folder. These include:
-settings.txt and gameplaysettings.txt (these store the settings you have defined, this will save you the trouble of redefining them later)
-The "save games" folder (this is crucial especially if your saves are all local)
-The "playlists" folder (this stores all the playsets you created in the launcher)
-Any mods in the "mod" folder that you downloaded manually (i.e. not through Steam)
2) You will now need to delete the Europa Universalis IV folder at Documents/Paradox Interactive/Europa Universalis IV. Make sure you have thoroughly done the first step without missing any important local files that could be lost. Everything else will re-download itself automatically once you relaunch the game.
3) Relaunch the game and you should now see the folder you just deleted re-appear and start to re-download all your subscribed mods. Copy all the files and folders in your backup folder and paste them back into their proper positions in the Documents/Paradox Interactive/Europa Universalis IV folder. If you are asked to overwrite an existing version of a file, accept it each time.
If you follow these steps properly, you should fix the problem and keep all your important local files intact. Subscribing to this mod should now properly give you the .mod file. This is the only known way to fix this issue for now until Paradox decides to fix it themselves.

Issue: When I try to run the mod, it just loads vanilla instead.
Solution: It's likely that either a) your .mod file has not downloaded yet, or b) your mod files have failed to download properly.
If you cannot get Steam Workshop to properly download the mod, there is a Manual Download here - https://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/threads/voltaires-nightmare-an-hre-expansion.934116/, and follow the Manual Download Installation Guide here: https://steamhost.cn/steamcommunity_com/workshop/filedetails/discussion/2415582296/3111396383969431257/
Note that you must re-download this when a new update to the download is released so that you can keep playing on the latest version. You also must unsubscribe from the Steam version for it to work!
Another alternative solution is to make sure no local mod (i.e not downloaded manually) is in your Documents/Paradox Interactive/Europa Universalis IV/mod folder, also make sure you are subscribed to this mod and delete that folder. Then relaunch the game, and the folder should re-appear and re-download all of your subscribed mods. This is good if your mod files failed to download for any reason.

Issue: One of the addons I'm using isn't working or is causing compatibility issues.
Solution: If you suspect an addon is causing a problem, just don't enable any of them and try playing VNN without them.

Issue: The launcher shows that the mod is incompatible due to not having the correct supported version.
Solution: This typically happens when Paradox releases a new update for the base game. If the second number in the patch is still the same (e.g 1.30.4 versus 1.30.5), then VNN still will most likely run, and you can ignore the warning. If however it's a different patch entirely (e.g 1.30 vs 1.31), VNN will almost certainly not work, and you'll have to roll back your game version to keep playing it.

Issue: The mod has updated, causing my save to not work properly. How do I get the old version of the mod so I can keep playing on that save?
Solution: You can request for a manual download of the older version on the Discord server and someone will hopefully respond and send you a download link.

Issue: The Stellaris Font Mod (or similar font mod) isn't working.
Solution: I'm unable to make it compatible due to the amount of UI changes I made; therefore you'll have to run the game without it.

Issue: The game crashes when trying to open the age window.
Solution: Disable all mods that change the UI/graphics/fonts of any kind (unless it's just map graphics) and play the game without them.

Issue: The graphics mod I'm trying to use isn't working.
Solution: I can't guarantee that all mods that would be ironman compatible normally would work in VNN due to the map being completely reworked. If you want to use a graphics mod that is guaranteed to work, here is one (https://steamhost.cn/steamcommunity_com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2412966907).

Issue: A feature that was added in a recent update isn't there on my end.
Solution: If you subscribed to the mod on Steam, the mod always updates automatically, but if you downloaded it manually (i.e. from the Paradox Forums), you have a local copy, and as such it must be updated manually each time. Repeat the steps of the manual download installation guide to resolve this issue and get the latest version of the mod.

Issue: Province names show up incorrectly and some country tags are unlocalized.
Solution: Run the game using the English language setting. This mod doesn’t support other languages.

Issue: All countries' flags are mixed up randomly.
Solution: You are likely loading in VNN just after using another overhaul mod. Load in vanilla once to reset the flags, quit and then start VNN again.

Issue: The game crashes at completely random times.
Solution: Please send me your save game as well as error.log, which will then allow me to identify your issue in more detail.

Issue: Some purple colored countries look weird on my screen.
Solution: Disable "Post Effects" in the game options.

Issue: The mod runs very slowly on my PC.
Solution: Try using Fast Universalis which is 100% compatible with VNN (https://steamhost.cn/steamcommunity_com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=820151246) and follow the instructions there on how to run the game at the best speed.

Issue: I can't complete a mission due to a bug.
Solution: If you're not playing on ironman mode, first open the console using ` and type 'debug_mode'. Then mouse over the mission that you want to complete to check its name in the code. Then type in the console 'mission [mission_name]' to automatically complete it. However you won't be able to receive the reward from it. If you find a mission bug, please report it so we can fix it.

Hey, just wanna say congrats on your development. Anyways, i started my first campaign as Dithmarschen, and one of the first missions "Pious Alliance" is supposed to give permanent claims on all of lower saxony and weser, but they appear to be regular claims that expire.

All permanent claims from missions have been turned into temporal claims. The tooltip hasn't been updated though.

I don't know if this is suppose to happen but my missions aren't giving me permanent claims as they would normally give in vanilla. Is this an intended change?

Yes, I already said this in my reply to your other comment. The claims are now only temporary

It seems like some but not all mission permaclaims have been removed. Some missions like Reclaim Neumark and Conquer Pomerania for Brandenburg/Prussia still give permas.

I left permanent claims in only for a few countries that historically became major powers, Brandenburg is one of them

It seems conquering any German province as Burgundy renames it to "Unreadable String"
Katharevousa  [developer] 7 Mar, 2021 @ 10:14pm
I found the source of the Unreadable String bug, it will be fixed in the next patch

I formed Magna Frisia, one of the new tags, and after I formed it the decision to form it didn't go away, so I can just click it over and over and get infinite prestige and increased centralization
Spartan Lemonade 9 Mar, 2021 @ 11:14pm
Is fabricating claims supposed to be disabled? I can click fabricate claim, but I don't get the claim

A known issue is that you will crash as the Ottomans when trying to build Janissaries from the macrobuilder, but I haven't heard of any problems when building from the province menu. If you're using any other mods, try disabling them and see if you are still having issues.

In the Age of Reformation, civil war comes when you have more than 10% overextension for a certain time. Is that on purpose? Or should it be 100 %? With only 10 % you can hardly expand. I play as Bregenz.

I have founded a republic. But there are no elections. On election day, the term of office is simply automatically extended. This is a bit inconvenient because my ruler is very bad.
