How about small skirmishes/battles?
Just make small "scenarios" of battles depending on era with their own map and people, or at least map. These maps can vary and size and just depend on which era of war you want to work on.
Anyways, how about a period between medieval warfare and the introduction of gunpowder? Basically, the beginning of Renaissance.
