Variant Soul Paragon upgrade token

I keep getting generic variant paragon upgrade tokens instead of the differentiated tokens that I can feed to my dinos to upgrade their paragon. I've tried feeding these generic tokens and nothing ever happens.

Does anyone know how to make these generic tokens useable?

The generic ones will never be useable

The question is how you get them in the first place, are you useing paragon souls without species data?
